Professor Do Young Kim's research lab specializes in liver disease research with a focus on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver fibrosis. The lab investigates noninvasive diagnostic methods such as liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and tumor markers like PIVKA-II and AFP to improve early detection and risk stratification. It also explores the impact of antiviral therapy and imaging response—particularly lipiodol uptake after transarterial chemoembolization—on clinical outcomes in HCC patients. LSPS is a reliable, noninvasive method for detection of HEVs. Patients with LSPS<3.5 may avoid endoscopy safely, whereas those with LSPS>5.5 should be considered for appropriate prophylactic treatments.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequently occurring malignancies and has a high mortality rate. The incidence of HCC differs greatly according to the geographic area. East and Southeast Asia, as well as middle and West Africas have the highest prevalence of HCC. The risk factors for developing HCC are well known and include cirrhosis, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, alcohol consumption, smoking, diabetes, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.
LS values at CVR are useful for predicting forthcoming LRE development. Thus, in the era of potent antiviral therapy, tailored surveillance strategies might be established based upon LS values at CVR.

Our data suggest that PIVKA-II is a useful tumor marker for HCC, complementary to AFP. Serial measurements of both markers after resection might be helpful for early diagnosis of tumor recurrence.
Initial compact lipiodol uptake after transarterial chemoembolisation is associated with improved survival in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. Accordingly, initial complete lipiodolisation should be considered a relevant therapeutic target.
