Highly conductive and intrinsically stretchable electrodes are vital components of soft electronics such as stretchable transistors and circuits, sensors and actuators, light-emitting diode arrays, and energy harvesting devices. Many kinds of conducting nanomaterials with outstanding electrical and mechanical properties have been integrated with elastomers to produce stretchable conductive nanocomposites. Understanding the characteristics of these nanocomposites and assessing the feasibility of
We synthesized uniform ferrimagnetic magnetite nanocubes in the size range from 20 to 160 nm. The magnetic property of the nanocubes was characterized, and magnetic separation of the histidine-tagged protein was demonstrated.
The accumulated knowledge of nanoparticle (NP) synthesis for the last 30 years has enabled the development of functional NPs for biomedical applications. Especially, NPs with multifunctional capabilities are gaining popularity as the demand for versatile and efficient NP agents increases. Various combinations of functional materials are integrated to form multicomponent NPs with designed size, structure, and multifunctionality. Their use as diagnostic and/or therapeutic tools is demonstrated, su
An urgent need in chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is to achieve high Fenton catalytic efficiency at small doses of CDT agents. However, simple general promotion of the Fenton reaction increases the risk of damaging normal cells along with the cancer cells. Therefore, a tailored strategy to selectively enhance the Fenton reactivity in tumors, for example, by taking advantage of the characteristics of the tumor microenvironment (TME), is in high demand. Herein, a heterogeneous CDT system based on coppe
Inorganic nanoparticle-based biomedical imaging probes have been studied extensively as a potential alternative to conventional molecular imaging probes. Not only can they provide better imaging performance but they can also offer greater versatility of multimodal, stimuli-responsive, and targeted imaging. However, inorganic nanoparticle-based probes are still far from practical use in clinics due to safety concerns and less-optimized efficiency. In this context, it would be valuable to look ove
Hollow Fe nanoframes were synthesized from the thermal decomposition of Fe(II)-stearate complex in the presence of sodium oleate and oleic acid. Sodium molten salts derived from sodium oleate seemed to be responsible for the formation of the nanoframes. Copyright © 2007 American Chemical Society.
The growing interest in nanomedicine over the last 20 years has carved out a research field called "nanocatalytic therapy," where catalytic reactions mediated by nanomaterials are employed to intervene in disease-critical biomolecular processes. Among many kinds of catalytic/enzyme-mimetic nanomaterials investigated thus far, ceria nanoparticles stand out from others owing to their unique scavenging properties against biologically noxious free radicals, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) an
Accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain is regarded as a major contributor to the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, development of clinically relevant techniques to reduce Aβ levels in AD patients is hindered by low efficiency and/or side effects. Here, an extracorporeal Aβ cleansing system, where multifunctional magnetite/ceria nanoparticle assemblies are used to remove Aβ peptides from flowing blood by specific capture and magnetic separation, is r
Postsurgical treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) by systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy is often inefficient. Tumor cells infiltrating deeply into the brain parenchyma are significant obstacles to the eradication of GBM. Here, we present a potential solution to this challenge by introducing an injectable thermoresponsive hydrogel nanocomposite. As a liquid solution that contains drug-loaded micelles and water-dispersible ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocubes (wFIONs), the hydrogel nanocom
Several types of nanoparticle-based imaging probes have been developed to replace conventional luminescent probes. For luminescence imaging, near-infrared (NIR) probes are useful in that they allow deep tissue penetration and high spatial resolution as a result of reduced light absorption/scattering and negligible autofluorescence in biological media. They rely on either an anti-Stokes or a Stokes shift process to generate luminescence. For example, transition metal-doped semiconductor nanoparti
Colloidal assemblies of nanoparticles possess both the intrinsic and collective properties of their constituent nanoparticles, which are useful in applications where ordinary nanoparticles are not well suited. Here, we report an immunoassay technique based on colloidal nanoparticle assemblies made of iron oxide nanoparticles (magnetic substrate) and manganese-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Mn) nanoparticles (photoluminescent substrate), both of which are functionalized with antibodies to capture target
Noble metal nanomaterials have been studied as conductive fillers for stretchable, conductive, and biocompatible nanocomposites. However, their performance as conductive filler materials is far from ideal because of their high percolation threshold and low intrinsic conductivity. Moreover, the difficulty in large-scale production is another critical hurdle in their practical applications. Here we report a method for the facile and scalable synthesis of whiskered gold nanosheets (W-AuNSs) for str
Giant magnetoresistive (GMR) nanosensors provide a novel approach for measuring protein concentrations in blood for medical diagnosis. Using an in vivo mouse radiation model, we developed protocols for measuring Flt3 ligand (Flt3lg) and serum amyloid A1 (Saa1) in small amounts of blood collected during the first week after X-ray exposures of sham, 0.1, 1, 2, 3, or 6 Gy. Flt3lg concentrations showed excellent dose discrimination at ≥ 1 Gy in the time window of 1 to 7 days after exposure except 1
