Professor Doo Ok Jang's research lab specializes in sustainable and selective organic synthesis, with a strong focus on developing environmentally friendly methodologies using advanced nanomaterials and innovative reaction techniques. The lab pioneers solvent-free and ball-milling-assisted transformations, leveraging recyclable ZnO nanoparticles and ionic liquid-coated nanocatalysts for the efficient synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles such as benzothiazoles, benzimidazoles, and benzoxazoles. Additionally, the group is actively engaged in enantioselective radical reactions and aqueous-phase transformations, employing chiral catalysts and indium-mediated processes to achieve high diastereoselectivity and atom economy. The overarching research direction emphasizes green chemistry principles, including low E-factor processes and easy product isolation, aligning with sustainable synthesis goals.

A convenient solvent-free method for the synthesis of benzothiazole, benzimidazole, and benzoxazole derivatives has been developed using recyclable ZnO-NPs via a ball-milling strategy. The method affords environmentally friendly reaction conditions that score high on the ecoscale with the low E-factor. The process is also highly efficient even on a multi-gram scale and provides easy product isolation.
A solvent-free selective synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles was developed in the presence of recyclable ionic liquid-coated ZnO-nanoparticles using a ball-milling technique.
An enantioselective addition of alkyl radicals to glyoxylate oxime ether mediated by Cinchona alkaloid derived chiral ammonium salts of hypophosphorous acid, QP and QDP, has been developed.
