Professor Euitae Kim's research lab specializes in molecular imaging and pharmacological neuroimaging, focusing on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying schizophrenia and other CNS disorders. The lab develops and validates advanced PET imaging techniques—such as partial volume correction methods like SFS-RR—to improve the accuracy of measuring dopamine synthesis capacity and receptor occupancy. By integrating pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) modeling with molecular imaging, the lab investigates how antipsychotic dosing and treatment timing influence brain function and clinical outcomes, particularly in early-stage schizophrenia. The research emphasizes translational applications, aiming to support early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and improved therapeutic strategies.

Positron emission tomography (PET) studies of dopamine receptor occupancy can be used to assess dosing of antipsychotics. Typically, studies of antipsychotics have applied pharmacodynamic (PD) modeling alone to characterize the relationship between antipsychotic dose and its effect on the brain. However, a limitation of this approach is that it does not account for the discrepancy between the time courses of plasma concentration and receptor occupancy by antipsychotics. Combined pharmacokinetic-
Starting paliperidone LAI significantly improved clinical and functional outcomes in patients with schizophrenia, especially those with shorter duration of illness. These findings suggest that LAI antipsychotic administration may be considered in early-stage schizophrenia for improved outcomes.
Molecular imaging techniques have a number of advantages for research into the pathophysiology and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Firstly, they provide a noninvasive means of characterizing physiological processes in the living brain, enabling molecular alterations to be linked to clinical changes. Secondly, the pathophysiological target in a given CNS disorder can be measured in animal models and in experimental human models in the same way, which enables translational res
We validated the use of a novel image-based method for partial volume correction (PVC), structural-functional synergistic resolution recovery (SFS-RR) for the accurate quantification of dopamine synthesis capacity measured using [(18)F]DOPA positron emission tomography. The bias and reliability of SFS-RR were compared with the geometric transfer matrix (GTM) method. Both methodologies were applied to the parametric maps of [(18)F]DOPA utilization rates (ki(cer)). Validation was first performed b
In a naturalistic setting, the different pattern of exposure to antipsychotics between the converter and non-converter groups calls attention to the effects of antipsychotics on conversion to psychosis.
The relationship between striatal dopamine synthesis capacity and frontostriatal FC is different between responders to first-line treatment and clozapine treatment in schizophrenia, indicating that a different pathophysiology could underlie schizophrenia in patients who respond to first-line treatments relative to those who do not.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of polymorphisms in dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) and cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 genes on delta EEG power response to aripiprazole in healthy male volunteers. Seventeen volunteers were recruited according to the DRD2 Taq1A genotype, and separated into the following groups: homozygous wild-type (A2/A2, n = 7), heterozygous (A2/A1, n = 5) and homozygous variant-type (A1/A1, n = 5) groups. After enrollment in this study, they were genotyped for
This suggests that DRD2 Taq1A polymorphism status may be associated with the clinical response to aripiprazole.
These findings indicate that the earlier the age of onset of OCD, the less serotonergic pathology there is and that this difference remains even after long-term serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment. Clinically, it might suggest that nonserotonergic treatments would be a better option for EOCD patients.
