Professor Eun Ran Kim's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC), with an emphasis on understanding the molecular mechanisms linking chronic inflammation to carcinogenesis. The lab investigates non-invasive diagnostic approaches, such as urine NMR metabolomics, for early detection of colorectal neoplasia, and explores novel therapeutic strategies, including long-acting GLP-1/GLP-2 receptor agonists for NAFLD/NASH. The lab also specializes in advanced endoscopic techniques like endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for treating gastrointestinal neoplasms, aiming to improve outcomes while minimizing complications.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC), although the overall incidence of IBD-associated CRC has been diminishing in recent decades in western countries. As demonstrated in previous studies, the risk of CRC in IBD increases with longer duration, extent of colitis, a familial history of CRC, coexistent primary sclerosing cholangitis, and the degree of inflammation. The pathogenesis of CRC in IBD is poorly understood. Similar to
Measurement of colon transit time is the most basic and primary tool in evaluating disorders of colonic motility. In particular, it is helpful in pathologic diagnosis and for planning management in patients with constipation. Several techniques for measuring colon transit time currently exist. The standard measurement of colon transit time has been performed using radioopaque marker test. The radioopaque marker test is the most widely used method; it is simple to perform as well as being cost ef
Although colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered one of the most preventable cancers, no non-invasive, accurate diagnostic tool to screen CRC exists. We explored the potential of urine nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics as a diagnostic tool for early detection of CRC, focusing on advanced adenoma and stage 0 CRC. Urine metabolomics profiles from patients with colorectal neoplasia (CRN; 36 advanced adenomas and 56 CRCs at various stages, n = 92) and healthy controls (normal, n = 156) wer
A long-acting dual agonist of GLP-1 and GLP-2 receptors is a promising therapeutic strategy to treat NAFLD/NASH.
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a useful procedure for the treatment of superficial gastrointestinal neoplasm. Compared with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), ESD has several benefits, which include resectability of various difficult lesion, accurate histologic assessment of specimen, and lower recurrence rate. However, the risk of procedure- related complications is higher with ESD than with EMR. Moreover, because the colon has a thin wall and limited endoscopic maneuverability, ESD
We found that the one SNP and the haplotype T-T-C were strongly associated with the allergic type of AD, but not with the non-allergic intrinsic type. These data support the hypothesis that IL-18 up-regulates IgE production, yet more experiments will be needed to prove the in vivo involvement of Th2 cytokine.
The extensive study of genetic alterations in colorectal cancer (CRC) has led to molecular diagnostics playing an increasingly important role in CRC diagnosis and treatment. Currently, it is believed that CRC is a consequence of the accumulation of both genetic and epigenetic genomic alterations. It is known that there are at least 3 major pathways that lead to colorectal carcinogenesis: (1) the chromosomal instability pathway, (2) the microsatellite instability pathway, and (3) the cytosine-pho
Optimal vaccines are needed for sustained suppression of SARS-CoV-2 and other novel coronaviruses. Here, we developed a recombinant type 5 adenovirus vector encoding the gene for the SARS-CoV-2 S1 subunit antigen (Ad5.SARS-CoV-2-S1) for COVID-19 immunization and evaluated its immunogenicity in mice. A single immunization with Ad5.SARS-CoV-2-S1 via S.C. injection or I.N delivery induced robust antibody and cellular immune responses. Vaccination elicited significant S1-specific IgG, IgG1, and IgG2

A novel prokinetic agent, DA-9701, improved gastric accommodation by increasing the postprandial gastric volume; these effects persisted for 60 min after a meal.
Patients with curatively resected ECC treated with ESD showed favorable long-term outcomes. Curatively resected SM1 cancer has a RFS similar to that of intramucosal cancer.
