Professor Eun Young Kim's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying circadian rhythms, with a particular emphasis on post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation in regulating the core clock proteins like PERIOD and CLOCK. The lab investigates the roles of kinases, including DBT/CKIε, and enzymes like O-GlcNAc transferase in controlling the timing, stability, and subcellular dynamics of these proteins to set the pace of the circadian clock. Additionally, the lab explores the regenerative potential of mesenchymal stem cells derived from amniotic fluid and amniotic membrane, highlighting their therapeutic applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The integration of circadian biology with stem cell biology and medical imaging further expands the lab’s translational impact in human health and disease.

The first circadian-relevant kinase to be identified was DOUBLE-TIME (DBT) in Drosophila, a homolog of vertebrate CKIepsilon, which regulates the progressive phosphorylation and stability of PERIOD (PER) proteins in animals. A negative feedback loop wherein PER directly inhibits the transcriptional activity of the CLOCK-CYCLE (CLK-CYC) heterodimer is central to the generation of molecular rhythms and normal progression of the clock in Drosophila. We show that DBT activity is required for the pha
Post-translational modifications of one or more central "clock" proteins, most notably time-of-day-dependent changes in phosphorylation, are critical for setting the pace of circadian (≅24 h) clocks. In animals, PERIOD (PER) proteins are the key state variable regulating circadian clock speed and undergo daily changes in abundance and cytoplasmic-nuclear distribution that are partly driven by a complex phosphorylation program. Here, we identify O-GlcNAcylation (O-GlcNAc) as a critical post-trans
A common feature of animal circadian clocks is the progressive phosphorylation of PERIOD (PER) proteins from hypo- to hyperphosphorylated species, events that are highly dependent on casein kinase 1 epsilon (termed DOUBLETIME [DBT] in Drosophila melanogaster) and necessary for normal clock progression. Drosophila PER (dPER) functions in the negative limb of the clockworks by presumably binding to the transcription factor CLOCK (CLK) and inhibiting its transactivation activity. Here, we identify
The purpose of this article is to provide a current review of the spectrum of multidetector CT (MDCT) and MRI findings for a variety of cardiac neoplasms. In the diagnosis of cardiac tumors, the use of MDCT and MRI can help differentiate benign from malignant masses. Especially, the use of MDCT is advantageous in providing anatomical information and MRI is useful for tissue characterization of cardiac masses. Knowledge of the characteristic MRI findings of benign cardiac tumors or thrombi can be
The mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are derived from the mesoderm, are considered as a readily available source for tissue engineering. They have multipotent differentiation capacity and can be differentiated into various cell types. Many studies have demonstrated that the MSCs identified from amniotic membrane (AM-MSCs) and amniotic fluid (AF-MSCs) are shows advantages for many reasons, including the possibility of noninvasive isolation, multipotency, self-renewal, low immunogenicity, anti
Both baseline breast density and its changes over time were found to be independently associated with the risk of breast cancer in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The risk of incident breast cancer increased in women with persistent dense breasts, whereas the breast cancer risk decreased as dense breasts regressed. The findings of the current study support that both dense breasts at baseline and their persistence over time are independent risk factors for developing breast cancer.
CEDM demonstrated a diagnostic performance comparable with CEMRI in depicting index cancers, secondary cancers, and occult cancer in the contralateral breast. CEDM demonstrated similar changes in surgical management compared with CEMRI.
DCE-MRI is useful in differentiating between septic hip arthritis and transient synovitis. If static contrast-enhanced coronal MRI is used, the optimal time for the acquisition of contrast-enhanced coronal MRI is approximately 3.5 minutes.
The impact of variations in serum thyroid hormone concentration within the euthyroid range on breast cancer risk remains unclear. We investigated the effect of serum thyrotropin (TSH) and thyroid hormone concentration on breast cancer risk. This cohort study involved 62,546 Korean women, aged ≥40 years, who were free of breast cancer at baseline and underwent health examination with determination of free thyroxine (FT4) and TSH. A parametric proportional hazard model was used to estimate the adj
