Professor Hakseung Shin's research lab specializes in service innovation and customer experience in hospitality and tourism, with a strong focus on digital transformation, online engagement, and value co-creation. The lab explores emerging trends such as service robotics, workcation experiences, and non-transactional values in online brand communities, integrating behavioral science and digital platform dynamics. Key research directions include the role of personalization, empowerment, and emotional experiences in shaping customer engagement and value creation. The lab employs mixed-methods approaches, combining qualitative netnography, experimental designs, and scale development to build theory-driven, empirically grounded insights.

Purpose Given the recent growth of service robot research in hospitality and tourism management (HTM), the purpose of this study is to identify a research agenda by conducting a systematic and holistic review of service robot research published in both HTM and broader business management (BM) journals. Design/methodology/approach Adopting a service ecosystem perspective, 38 HTM articles and 13 highly cocited BM articles out of 126 BM articles were qualitatively reviewed to analyze the intellectu
Tourism provides myriad opportunities for customer engagement and value co-creation, especially in online communities. This research analyzed the role of empowerment in the tourist knowledge value co-creation process in online review contexts. Using scenario-based, between-subjects experimental designs, three studies were conducted using online consumer samples to examine the effects of hotel response personalization and online review valence on empowerment and intention to co-create knowledge v
To better understand engagement behaviors in online hospitality brand communities, the purpose of this research was to understand hotel customers’ online engagement behaviors, associated cocreated nontransactional values, and the underlying drivers. Netnography analysis and qualitative surveys along with multiorder categorization analysis were used. The netnography results indicate that hotel customer engagement behaviors cocreate five types of value. Importantly, these values accrue in differen
Since the COVID-19 crisis has accelerated digital transformation around the world, one notable trend in the tourism industry is the emergence of long-stay tourism, such as workcation which combines working and vacationing. Although workcation travel displays unique experiential characteristics compared with traditional travel experiences, conceptual and empirical knowledge on the nature and dimensional structure of such experiences is lacking. To fill this gap, this research conceptualizes workc
