Professor Hang Lee's research lab specializes in molecular phylogenetics, population genetics, and reproductive biology, with a focus on understanding genetic diversity, evolutionary relationships, and physiological mechanisms in mammals and livestock. The lab investigates mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to trace phylogeographic patterns in wild and domesticated species such as pigs, chipmunks, goral, and serows, while also exploring creatine metabolism and reproductive tract physiology in rodents and equids. Their work integrates molecular techniques with ecological and morphological data to address questions in evolutionary biology and animal science.

Previous studies from this laboratory showed that high levels of guanidinoacetate methyltransferase are present in mouse testis and epididymis, whereas guanidinoacetate methyltransferase mRNA and protein are not detected in seminal vesicles where large amounts of creatine (Cr) and phosphocreatine are found (Lee et al., Biol Reprod 1994; 50:152-162). To further investigate the origin(s) of Cr in the male reproductive tract, the expression patterns of the three enzymes and a transporter involved i
Genetics of pigs has been well studied in Europe and Asia, but most of previous studies of molecular phylogeny of Sus scrofa have been based on sequences of both wild and domestic forms. In this study we analysed genetic traits of Sus scrofa from 13 regions in Asia (including previously undisclosed Eastern Caucasus and Trans-Baikal regions) using purely wild boar samples. Mitochondrial control region and Y-chromosome genes (AMELY & USP9Y) were employed to resolve phylogeographic relationships. W
Twenty-five chipmunk species occur in the world, of which only the Siberian chipmunk, Tamias sibiricus, inhabits Asia. To investigate mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence variations and population structure of the Siberian chipmunk in northeastern Asia, we examined mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences (1140 bp) from 3 countries. Analyses of 41 individuals from South Korea and 33 individuals from Russia and northeast China resulted in 37 haplotypes and 27 haplotypes, respectively. There were no sh
A relationship between HBV and neonatal death was not identified.
To investigate the molecular phylogenetic status of the Korean goral, Nemorhaedus caudatus raddeanus, and Japanese serow, Capricornis crispus, we determined partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of twelve Korean gorals and sixteen Japanese serows, and compared them with those of the major lineages of Rupicaprini species including two other Nemorhaedus species and two other Capricornis species. The Korean gorals examined possessed two haplotypes with only one nucleotide differe
This study aimed to investigate whether breed, sex, and age affected temperament differently (more or less neophobic) in mature horses during a novel object test. The study included Jeju crossbred (n = 12, age = 9.42 ± 4.57 y), Thoroughbred (n = 15, age = 10.73 ± 3.09 y), and Warmblood horses (n = 12, age = 13.08 ± 3.55 y) with the females (n = 22, age = 11.36 ± 4.24 y) and geldings (n = 17, age = 10.65 ± 3.66 y). Jeju crossbreds (Jeju horse × Thoroughbred) are valuable considering their popular
