Professor Hee Jung Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of musculoskeletal health, sarcopenia, and chronic pain, particularly in aging populations. The lab investigates the role of muscle mass and strength in pain perception and treatment outcomes, with a strong emphasis on sarcopenia as a modifiable risk factor in degenerative spinal disease and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Research also extends to nutritional status, physical activity, and quality of life in cancer patients, highlighting the importance of systemic factors in clinical outcomes. The lab employs clinical, observational, and population-based studies to identify biomarkers and predictors for improved patient care and rehabilitation strategies.

Although CYP1B1 mutations are major causes of PCG in Korea, ~70% of PCG patients have neither CYP1B1 nor MYOC mutations suggesting a high degree of genetic heterogeneity. Furthermore, the fact that 11 out of 22 patients had only one mutant allele in the CYP1B1 gene necessitates further investigation for other genetic backgrounds underlying PCG.

Monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO₂ (M)) particles co-doped with niobium and tungsten, with potential application in smart windows, were synthesized by hydrolysis and subsequent thermal decomposition of vanadyl sulfate. High fat infiltration of the paraspinal muscles at the mid-lumbar region appeared to be an independent factor associated with poor analgesia after epidural steroid injection in elderly patients with symptomatic degenerative lumbar spinal disease receiving conservative care. However, the cross-sectional area of the paraspinal muscles was not associated with pain relief after injection.
