Acute limb ischemia (ALI) is a rapid decrease in lower limb blood flow due to acute occlusion of peripheral artery or bypass graft, and in ALI not only limbs but also life prognosis will be poor unless quick and appropriate treatment is given. The etiology is broadly divided into embolism and thrombosis with various comorbidities. The symptoms of ALI are abrupt with pain, numbness, and coldness of lower limb, and paresthesia, contracture, and irreversible purpura will appear with the exacerbatio
Visceral artery aneurysms (VAAs) are rare and affect the celiac artery, superior mesenteric artery, and inferior mesenteric artery, and their branches. The natural history of VAAs is not well understood as they are often asymptomatic and found incidentally; however, they carry a risk of rupture that can result in death from hemorrhage in the peritoneal cavity, retroperitoneal space, or gastrointestinal tract. Recent advances in imaging technology and its availability allow us to diagnose all typ
Dysregulation of apoptosis is one of the likely underlying mechanisms of neointimal thickening, a disorder in which proinflammatory cytokines may influence the function of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and contribute to atherogenesis. One of these cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), induces 2 possibly conflicting pathways, 1 leading to the activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) and the other leading to caspase-mediated apoptosis. We investigated whether specific i
High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a monocyte-derived inflammatory mediator that is released in some conditions including shock, tissue injury, and endotoxin-induced lethality. In this study, we determined the plasma and hepatic tissue levels of HMGB1 in a drug-induced rat acute liver failure (ALF) model and investigated the effect of HMGB1 blockade on ALF. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 250 to 300 g, were used for this study. d-galactosamine was injected into the penile vein to indu
No study has reported an animal model of uterus transplantation (UTx) using cynomolgus macaques. We aimed to establish a surgical technique of allogeneic UTx assuming the recovery of a uterus from a deceased donor in cynomolgus macaques. Four allogeneic UTxs were performed in female cynomolgus macaques. Donor surgeries comprised en bloc recovery of organs with iliac vessels on both sides, and/or abdominal aorta/vena cava after sufficient perfusion from one femoral artery or external iliac artery
