We hypothesized that expert epileptologists can detect seizures directly by visually analyzing EEG plot images, unlike automated methods that analyze spectro-temporal features or complex, non-stationary features of EEG signals. If so, seizure detection could benefit from convolutional neural networks because their visual recognition ability is comparable to that of humans. We explored image-based seizure detection by applying convolutional neural networks to long-term EEG that included epileptic
We characterized the auditory-evoked offset responses of the rat auditory cortex by multiple-site surface microelectrode recording. Tone bursts served as test stimuli. Offset responses did not appear tonotopically, but at the fringe of tonotopic onset distributions. Offset amplitude was significantly sensitive to sound intensity, fall time at tone termination, and duration. These results suggest that offset responses are associated with inhibitory responses surrounding excitatory onset responses
Mismatch Negativity (MMN) is an N-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA)-mediated, negative deflection in human auditory evoked potentials in response to a cognitively discriminable change. MMN-like responses have been extensively investigated in animal models, but the existence of MMN equivalent is still controversial. In this study, we aimed to investigate how closely the putative MMN (MMNp) in rats exhibited the comparable properties of human MMN. We used a surface microelectrode array with a grid of
Rich dynamics in a living neuronal system can be considered as a computational resource for physical reservoir computing (PRC). However, PRC that generates a coherent signal output from a spontaneously active neuronal system is still challenging. To overcome this difficulty, we here constructed a closed-loop experimental setup for PRC of a living neuronal culture, where neural activities were recorded with a microelectrode array and stimulated optically using caged compounds. The system was equi
Since its discovery nearly four decades ago, sequential microelectrode mapping using hundreds of recording sites has been able to reveal a precise tonotopic organization of the auditory cortex. Despite concerns regarding the effects that anesthesia might have on neuronal responses to tones, anesthesia was essential for these experiments because such dense mapping was elaborate and time-consuming. Here, taking an 'all-at-once' approach, we investigated how isoflurane modifies spatiotemporal activ
Repeating stable spatiotemporal patterns emerge in synchronized spontaneous activity in neuronal networks. The repertoire of such patterns can serve as memory, or a reservoir of information, in a neuronal network; moreover, the variety of patterns may represent the network memory capacity. However, a neuronal substrate for producing a repertoire of patterns in synchronization remains elusive. We herein hypothesize that state-dependent propagation of a neuronal sub-population is the key mechanism
A label of "non-seizure-but-abnormal" offers practical benefits for seizure detection. The modification of a CNN with an AE is worth considering because AEs can automatically assign "non-seizure-but-abnormal" labels in an unsupervised manner with no additional demands on the time of the epileptologist.
The phase of cortical oscillations contains rich information and is valuable for encoding sound stimuli. Here we hypothesized that oscillatory phase modulation, instead of amplitude modulation, is a neural correlate of auditory streaming. Our behavioral evaluation provided compelling evidences for the first time that rats are able to organize auditory stream. Local field potentials (LFPs) were investigated in the cortical layer IV or deeper in the primary auditory cortex of anesthetized rats. In
Beat perception and synchronization within 120 to 140 beats/min (BPM) are common in humans and frequently used in music composition. Why beat synchronization is uncommon in some species and the mechanism determining the optimal tempo are unclear. Here, we examined physical movements and neural activities in rats to determine their beat sensitivity. Close inspection of head movements and neural recordings revealed that rats displayed prominent beat synchronization and activities in the auditory c
Novel supramolecular complexes have been prepared from an alpha-cyclodextrin-beta-cyclodextrin hetero-dimer (alpha-CD-beta-CD hetero-dimer) and hetero-cinnamamide guest dimers, G-t-Boc and G-NH2, having adamantyl groups in aqueous solutions. On addition of the competitive guest, the supramolecular structure formed by a mixture of the alpha-CD-beta-CD hetero-dimer and G-t-Boc was found to be different from that of a mixture of the alpha-CD-beta-CD hetero-dimer and G-NH2 by the 1H NMR spectroscopy
We epipially mapped tone-burst-evoked potentials over the rat auditory cortex, and investigated the representation of intensity information. The experiments were designed to elucidate how the auditory cortex represents a steady-state plateau sound pressure level (SPL) and dynamic onset temporal structure, i.e., the rate of pressure change (in Pa/s), and how the representations differ across the auditory fields. The anterior and ventral fields have spatial axes of the rate of pressure change. Cha
