Matsumoto教授の研究室は、地球の古環境変動を解明するため、海洋堆積物中のルテニウム・オキシジェン同位体比(187Os/188Os)を主なプロキシとして、巨大玄武岩火成体(LIPs)の噴出と海洋酸素欠乏イベント(OAEs)の因果関係を解明しています。特に、中生代クレタス期の温暖化や酸素欠乏を引き起こした火山活動のタイムスケール的側面に注目し、高分解能な同位体レコードを用いて地球システムのダイナミクスを解明しています。また、炭素同位体比(δ13C)やPb同位体と併用することで、火山活動の正確な時期特定とその環境的影響を精密に再構築しています。
