In the present study, we used a large-scale integration (LSI)-based amperometric sensor array system, designated Bio-LSI, to image dopamine release from three-dimensional (3D)-cultured PC12 cells (PC12 spheroids). The Bio-LSI device consists of 400 sensor electrodes with a pitch of 250 μm for rapid electrochemical imaging of large areas. PC12 spheroids were stimulated with K(+) to release dopamine. Poststimulation dopamine release from the PC12 spheroids was electrochemically imaged using the Bi
Abstract A new class of Pt-free catalysts was designed that included molecular iron phthalocyanine (FePc) derivatives, namely, iron azaphthalocyanine (FeAzPc) unimolecular layers (Fe AzULs) adsorbed on oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes (oxMWCNTs). FeAzPcs were dissolved in organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and catalytic electrodes modified with molecularly adsorbed FeAzPcs were successfully prepared. The optimized composition of the catalytic electrodes was determined, and th
A difference in fracture strength was noted among commercial alumina ceramics. The origin of this difference was examined using optical microscopy in the transmission mode. Large defects measuring several tens of micrometers or more were clearly observed, and a direct correlation was found between the size of the large defects and the strength of the ceramics. The results indicated that a low concentration of large defects controlled the strength distribution of the ceramics studied.
Here we report on the flattening of water droplets using an ultrathin membrane of autopolymerized polydopamine at the air/water interface. This has only been previously reported with the use of synthetic or extracted peptides, two-dimensional designed synthetic peptide thin films with thicknesses of several tens of nanometers. However, in the previous study, the shape of the water droplet was changed irreversibly and the phenomenon was observed only at the air/water interface. In the present stu
A charged porous microneedle (PMN) generates the electroosmotic flow (EOF) and promotes the through‐needle transport of molecules and particles, indicating its applicability for the EOF‐based low‐invasive transdermal delivery of drugs and vaccines. The negatively charged PMN is prepared by grafting a thin film of poly (2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) onto the inner wall of the microchannels of the polyglycidyl methacrylate PMN. Promoted transport from anode to cathode is obser
There are several effective nonadiabatic alignment control schemes that use multilaser pulse excitation. To explain the control mechanisms in a unified manner through a case study, we apply nonresonant optimal control simulation to a rovibrational model of ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$. For experimental feasibility, we introduce a penalty and/or constraint to the simulation to impose restrictions on the number of optically accessible rotational states. When the control time is set to one rotational period,
Abstract On-demand underwater adhesives with excellent adhesive and gentle detachment properties enable stable connections to various biomedical devices and biointerfaces and avoid the risk of harmful tissue damage upon detachment. Herein, we present a Janus hydrogel adhesive that can reversibly switch its adhesion strength, which is controlled by temperature, using a thermoresponsive polymer and mussel-inspired molecules. This thermoswitchable adhesive (TSA) hydrogel displays both strong adhesi
Abstract An array of porous microneedles (PMNs) made of biodegradable poly(lactic‐ co ‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) is fabricated by a combination of molding and freeze‐drying methods. The optimized mixture of PLGA and 1,4‐dioxane is poured into a mold of a microneedle array, followed by the freezing and sublimation of the frozen particles of 1,4‐dioxane, a procedure that left an interconnecting porous structure in the PLGA with a porosity around 50%. The mechanical strength of the PMN made of PLGA (PL
We herein report that sulfur and nitrogen co-doped hollow spherical carbon particles can be applied to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts prepared by calcination of polydopamine (PDA) hollow particles. The hollow structure of PDA was formed by auto-oxidative interfacial polymerization of dopamine at the oil and water interface of emulsion microdroplets. The PDA was used as the nitrogen source as well as a platform for sulfur-doping. The obtained sulfur and nitrogen co-doped hollow
We here report the electrochemical imaging of cell adhesion using a large-scale integration (LSI)-based amperometric device, called a Bio-LSI device. The device consists of 400 sensor electrodes arranged with a pitch of 250 µm. The device surface was modified with collagen to assist in the culture of MCF-7 cells and promote their adhesion. The cells disturb the electrochemical reaction of redox mediators, allowing the electrochemical signal to be used to evaluate cell adhesion at the single-cell
Here we report the synthesis and electrocatalytic properties of polymer films containing nitrogen and iron. The films were prepared by calcination of polydopamine, polyethyleneimine and iron. The c...
