The authors report the expansion of the temperature range of cholesteric blue phases by doping nanoparticles. When spherical gold nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 3.7 nm were doped in a blue phase-exhibiting multi-component liquid crystal mixture, the temperature range of the cholesteric blue phase increased from 0.5 to 5 °C, while the clearing temperature decreased by approximately 13 °C. We believe that the mechanism stabilizing the cholesteric blue phase is similar to that of polymer-sta
Abstract The parallel transport of a protein by surface and pore diffusion within a highly porous ion exchanger is studied by measuring equilibria and uptake curves for adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on two different strongly basic chitosan ion exchangers (hard gels): Ch‐2503 and Ch‐2507 at pH 6.9 and 298 K. Experimental equilibrium isotherms are correlated by the Langmuir equation. Intraparticle effective diffusivities of BSA (D eff ) are determined from the homogeneous Fickian diffus
Topological defects in liquid crystals not only affect the optical and rheological properties of the host, but can also act as scaffolds in which to trap nano or micro-sized colloidal objects. The creation of complex defect shapes, however, often involves confining the liquid crystals in curved geometries or adds complex-shaped colloidal objects, which are unsuitable for device applications. Using topologically patterned substrates, here we demonstrate the controlled generation of three-dimensio
The recovery of direct dye and acid dye from dilute aqueous solution by adsorption on chitosan fiber, which is cheaper than an activated carbon fiber, appeared technically and economically feasible. The amounts of adsorption of Brilliant Yellow (direct dye) and Acid Orange II (acid dye) on the chitosan fiber were much larger than that for the activated carbon fiber, though these dyes were adsorbed well on the activated carbon fiber too. The experimental equilibrium isotherms were correlated by B
A simple and robust method to prepare nanoparticle-dispersed liquid crystals is demonstrated. Highly dispersed gold nanoparticle–liquid crystal suspensions are fabricated by simply sputter doping the gold target on the host liquid crystal (see figure). The existence of the nanoparticles is supported by optical extinction measurements, polarization optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. An improvement in the electro-optic response, namely, a decrease in the threshold voltage, i
Continuous tuning of lasing wavelength is achieved in cholesteric liquid crystal lasers by embedding a network of nanopores with an average size of 10 nm filled with liquid crystals inside a polymerized matrix with helical order. The device possesses both high transparency and a fast response time because the tuning is driven by local reorientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the nanopores.
The study presented in this paper is focused on processing squid wastes by using sub-critical water extraction and hydrolysis to produce valuable substances. Using a small-scale batch reactor (9.0 cm3), squid entrails were treated with sub- and supercritical water without oxidants. Reaction conditions involved temperatures of 443–673 K, pressures 0.792–30.0 MPa, and reaction times 1–50 minutes. Fat and oil were extracted into sub-critical water very efficiently, and soluble proteins, organic aci
The large amount of seafood wastes discharged from related industries has become a serious problem. Since these wastes contain high concentrations of organic variables such as proteins and fat, a method for recovery of these useful materials would be a highly desirable process. In this work, sub- and supercritical water hydrolysis of scallop viscera wastes has been studied in a batch-type reactor. Experiments were performed at a temperature range of 443–673 K with the reaction time between 1–50
