Professor Hye Ah Lee's research lab focuses on early-life determinants of metabolic and cardiovascular health, with a strong emphasis on the long-term impacts of childhood lifestyle, nutrition, and environmental exposures. The lab investigates the interplay between age, period, and cohort effects on ischemic heart disease risk, particularly in women, and explores how preadolescent weight status, dietary patterns, and early-life factors such as breastfeeding influence metabolic syndrome and pubertal development. A key focus is on identifying modifiable risk factors during critical developmental windows to inform preventive public health strategies. The lab also examines low-dose environmental exposures, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and their metabolic consequences in children through longitudinal cohort studies.

The future cohort effect might have a lasting impact on the risk of ischemic heart disease in women with the increasing elderly population, and a national prevention policy is need to establish management of high risk by considering the age-period-cohort effect.
This study showed that being overweight or obese during preadolescence is associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome and is related to unhealthy eating behaviors. Thus, weight-control strategies and healthy eating behaviors should be developed early in life to reduce the risk for metabolic syndrome.
Our results provide evidence justifying the management of metabolic components in obese individuals. In addition, our results will help prioritize interventions for comorbidity reduction as a public health goal.

These results demonstrate a beneficial association between breast-feeding and early pubertal development, especially in those breast-fed for 6 months or longer. The study suggests that interventions would need to start early in life to prevent early pubertal development.

We found that poor dietary quality among children in lower-income households was partially explained by their being less likely to eat breakfast, but that eating breakfast did not entirely mediate these effects.
