Professor Hye In Kim's research lab focuses on thyroid cancer outcomes, particularly the prognostic implications of thyroid function, surgical management, and immune-related adverse events in cancer therapy. The lab investigates how biological rhythms, treatment-related thyroid dysfunction, and lymph node involvement influence cancer progression and survival in patients with papillary thyroid cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Key research directions include optimizing active surveillance strategies, refining staging systems for better risk prediction, and evaluating the impact of surgeon volume and treatment timing on long-term outcomes. The lab integrates clinical oncology with endocrinology and patient-reported outcomes to improve personalized cancer care.

Purpose: Drugs that blockade interaction between programmed cell-death protein 1 (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-L1) are promising. Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) might be associated with favorable clinical outcomes, and thyroid dysfunction is one of the most common irAE. We evaluated the association of thyroid dysfunction during PD-1 blockade with the treatment efficacy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Experimental Design: A total 58 patients with stage IV NSC
Sustained elevation of serum TSH levels during active surveillance is associated with PTMC progression. Maintaining a low-normal TSH range with levothyroxine treatment during active surveillance of PTMC might be considered in future studies.
Disturbances in biological rhythms could lead to unfavorable health impact. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in rotating shift workers, and to determine the factors that have significant association with the prevalence of FD and IBS. The research had been carried out among nurses and nursing assistants working at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital between December 2010 and February 2011. The subjects completed self-r
Drugs were the most frequent cause of these diseases. However, non-drug-related causes also contributed to a significant proportion of cases. Physicians should keep this in mind when documenting patient history. In addition, early recognition and treatment may be important for better outcomes.
To increase the pharmacological effects of red ginseng (RG, the steamed root of Panax ginseng Meyer), RG products modified by heat process or fermentation have been developed. However, the antiallergic effects of RG and modified/fermented RG have not been simultaneously examined. Therefore, we examined the allergic rhinitis (AR)-inhibitory effects of water-extracted RG (wRG), 50% ethanol-extracted RG (eRG), and bifidobacteria-fermented eRG (fRG) in vivo. RBL-2H3 cells were stimulated with phorbo
Surgeon volume is associated with structural recurrence, but not distant metastasis or cancer-specific death in patients with N1b PTC. Surgeon volume is important in initial surgery for advanced PTC with extensive nodal metastasis in order to ensure curative outcome and reduce treatment-related morbidity.
This study aimed to identify the prevalence of sarcopenia, obesity, and sarcopenic obesity and examine their association with radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) and knee pain in Korean postmenopausal women. This cross-sectional study utilized the data from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2009-2011. The participants were categorized into 4 groups based on body composition: either sarcopenic (appendicular skeletal muscle < 23%) or not, either obese (body mass index ≥ 25
The pneumonia severity index (PSI) and CURB-65 are widely used tools for the prediction of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). This study was conducted to evaluate validation of severity scoring system including the PSI and CURB-65 scores of Korean CAP patients. In the prospective CAP cohort (participated in by 14 hospitals in Korea from January 2009 to September 2011), 883 patients aged over 18 yr were studied. The 30-day mortalities of all patients were calculated with their PSI index classes
RG may be an effective dietary supplement for postmenopausal women with degenerative osteoarthritis of the hand. It may relieve pain and improve antioxidative activity without the risk of endometrial thickening.
