Professor Hyeon-Dong Shin's research lab specializes in systematic mycology and plant pathology, with a focus on the taxonomy, morphology, and molecular phylogenetics of fungal pathogens—particularly powdery mildews and downy mildews—on various host plants. The lab conducts detailed morphological and molecular analyses to clarify species boundaries and host specificity, especially within complex fungal groups such as *Golovinomyces* and *Marssonina*. Their work integrates field surveys, herbarium studies, and DNA sequencing to resolve taxonomic ambiguities and support sustainable agriculture.

In the green belt surrounding Buenos Aires and La Plata cities, Argentina, sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) is grown commercially under greenhouse mainly for fresh consumption. In February 2008, plants showing typical symptoms of downy mildew were found in greenhouses in La Plata. The disease was widespread in the cropped area with 100% prevalence. Leafy lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is one of the most important crops in Korea, cultivated throughout the year in plastic houses.
