Professor Hyun Cheol Chung's research lab specializes in translational oncology, focusing on immunotherapy for advanced and treatment-experienced cancers. The lab investigates immune checkpoint inhibitors, particularly pembrolizumab, in diverse malignancies such as cervical, small cell lung, and HER2-positive gastric cancers. Key research directions include evaluating biomarker-driven responses (e.g., PD-L1 status), optimizing combination therapies (e.g., with trastuzumab or chemotherapy), and advancing clinical trial design for precision immunotherapy. The lab plays a pivotal role in bridging preclinical insights with clinical application to improve outcomes in aggressive, hard-to-treat cancers.

Pembrolizumab monotherapy demonstrated durable antitumor activity and manageable safety in patients with advanced cervical cancer. On the basis of these results, the US Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval of pembrolizumab for patients with advanced PD-L1-positive cervical cancer who experienced progression during or after chemotherapy.
8506 Background: The antitumor activity of pembrolizumab, an IgG4 anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody, was evaluated in patients (pts) with SCLC in KEYNOTE-158 (NCT02628067), a phase 2 basket study of 11 cancer types. Methods: Enrolled pts were aged ≥18 y with advanced SCLC; had measurable disease per RECIST v1.1; ECOG PS ≤1; incurable disease with prior failure of, progression on, or intolerance to standard therapy; and evaluable tumor samples for PD-L1 (PD-L1 IHC 22C3 pharmDx assay [Agilent Technolo
Treatment options for patients with HER2-positive advanced gastric cancer are limited, and the prognosis for these patients is poor. Pembrolizumab has demonstrated promising antitumor activity in patients with advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma as monotherapy, in combination with chemotherapy and in combination with trastuzumab. Combining pembrolizumab with trastuzumab and chemotherapy may therefore provide a benefit for patients with advanced HER2-positive gastric canc
