研究室紹介

Professor Hyun Sik Gong's research lab specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, with a focus on orthopedic trauma, congenital hand differences, and surgical management of degenerative and metabolic bone diseases. The lab investigates clinical outcomes in conditions such as osteoporosis-related fragility fractures, Freiberg disease, polydactyly, and carpal tunnel syndrome, emphasizing evidence-based surgical techniques and patient-centered care. Research directions include improving diagnostic and treatment protocols, developing anatomically based classification systems, and enhancing post-fracture osteoporosis management. The lab also explores patient preferences in surgical decision-making to optimize clinical consultation and outcomes.

Patients with Wrist Fractures Are Less Likely to Be Evaluated and Managed for Osteoporosis

SJR Q1FWCI 6.4Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery

Despite a recent increase in the recognition of osteoporosis in patients with fragility fractures, our review of this national cohort indicates that patients with a wrist fracture are less likely to be evaluated and managed for osteoporosis than those with a hip or spine fracture by physicians who are responsible for treating symptomatic fractures. Additional studies and intervention programs are necessary to improve this care gap, beginning with physicians who are responsible for fracture treat

In patients with Freiberg disease, intra-articular dorsal wedge osteotomy restores congruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint, and fixation with absorbable pins provides adequate fixation and avoids a second procedure for implant removal.

SJR Q2FWCI 2.7Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics

Background: Polydactyly is one of the most common congenital differences that affect the hand. It has various anatomic and morphologic features. Although the Wassel classification has been used widely for radial polydactyly, it is based on the anatomic level of duplication and has some limitations in describing the concrete morphology of the duplication. The authors devised a new classification system based on the anatomic pattern of duplication to facilitate surgical correction of the deformity

Patients’ Preferred and Retrospectively Perceived Levels of Involvement During Decision-Making Regarding Carpal Tunnel Release

SJR Q1FWCI 1.8Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery

The majority of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome preferred to share surgical decision-making with the surgeon, and those who preferred a collaborative role had less severe symptoms than those who preferred a fully active or a fully passive role. A history of a surgical procedure, having a caregiver, and having private insurance were associated with a more active role. This information may assist the establishment of patient-centered consultation in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

SJR Q1FWCI 1.8PLoS ONEOA

Strain sensors capable of monitoring complex human motions are highly desirable for the development of wearable electronic devices and healthcare monitoring systems. Excellent sensitivity and a wide working range of the sensor material are important requirements for distinguishing dynamic human motion. In this study, a highly stretchable strain sensor was fabricated via inkjet printing of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films on a stretchable polydimethylsiloxane substrate. The sensor

Women with carpal tunnel syndrome report that subjective symptom severity is the most important reason for undergoing surgery. Understanding this and other patient concerns may help physicians during patient-oriented consultation and decision-making. In particular, recommendations for carpal tunnel release on the basis of symptoms are reasonable from the perspective of the patient who has carpal tunnel syndrome without a known cause.
