Professor Hyun Su Kim's research lab specializes in medical imaging and diagnostic radiology, with a focus on improving the accuracy and clinical utility of advanced imaging techniques such as PET/CT, MRI, and DWI in oncology and infectious diseases. The lab investigates the role of imaging in early disease detection, treatment response assessment, and personalized screening programs, particularly in lung cancer, cervical cancer, and infectious conditions like pandemic influenza and mycobacterial infections. Research also emphasizes optimizing national screening strategies by integrating age-specific and risk-adapted approaches to enhance health outcomes across diverse populations.

Abstract One of the most important physical factors related to the thermal conductivity of composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is the dimensions of the GNPs, that is, their lateral size and thickness. In this study, we reveal the relationship between the thermal conductivity of polymer composites and the realistic size of GNP fillers within the polymer composites (measured using three-dimensional (3D) non-destructive micro X-ray CT analysis) while minimizing the effects of the p
Screening can effectively reduce mortality and morbidity in some diseases. In Korea, a practical national screening program for chronic disease was launched in 1995 and several problems were discussed. The program focused primarily on disease detection without follow-up care. In addition, the test items were uniform regardless of subject's age, sex, or risk factors; and people with low socioeconomic status were excluded. To improve the quality of program, a new national screening program called
Positron emission tomography / computed tomography (PET/CT), with its metabolic data of (18) F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) cellular uptake in addition to morphologic CT data, is an established technique for staging of lung cancer and has higher sensitivity and accuracy for lung nodule characterization than conventional approaches. Its strength extends outside the chest, with unknown metastases detected or suspected metastases excluded in a significant number of patients. Lastly, PET/CT is used in t
Common CT findings of M massiliense diseases overlap with those of M abscessus disease. However, responses to antibiotic treatment are much different; in M massiliense disease, negative sputum conversion is accomplished in all patients and serial CT scans show improvement in most patients.
DWI may have potentials in evaluating the therapeutic response to CCRT in patients with cervical cancer.
Adjunctive intrawound local application of vancomycin powder is a simple uncomplicated procedure and can result in a significant reduction of SSI in instrumented spinal fusions. Furthermore, culture of the drainage tip is very important for confirmation of deep wound infection.
The objective of this study was to examine the tumor spatial heterogeneity in myxoid-containing soft-tissue tumors (STTs) using texture analysis of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). A total of 40 patients with myxoid-containing STTs (23 benign and 17 malignant) were included in this study. The region of interest (ROI) was manually drawn on the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map. For texture analysis, the global (mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis), regional (intensity variabi
The aim of this study was to describe the features of deaths associated with the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) by 26 November 2009 in Korea. We collected standardized case reports on 115 confirmed deaths through a nationwide enhanced influenza surveillance system. The median age was 61 yr (interquartile range [IQR], 0.2-97 yr) and 58 (50.4%) were females. The case fatality rate was estimated as 16 per 100,000 cases. The age-related mortality rate had a J-shaped curve. Eighty-three patients (7
MRI features were useful in differentiating between intradural extramedullary schwannomas from meningiomas. The presence of cystic change and dural tail sign were independently significant discriminators.
Neonatal ovarian torsion most commonly manifests as an asymptomatic complex cyst on sonography due to torsion of a fetal ovarian cyst. Serial monitoring of a fetal ovarian cyst for its resolution or changes in its appearance is mandatory for making an early diagnosis of torsion. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
