Professor Hyun-Duck Kim's research lab focuses on the interdisciplinary investigation of periodontitis and its systemic implications, particularly in relation to oral and systemic diseases. The lab explores the bidirectional links between periodontal disease and conditions such as stroke, cognitive impairment, hypertension, and oral squamous cell carcinoma, with a strong emphasis on epidemiological and biomarker-based approaches in the Korean population. Key research directions include identifying salivary biomarkers like MMP-9 and S100A8 for early diagnosis and understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms connecting periodontitis to systemic inflammation and chronic diseases. The lab integrates clinical data, cohort studies, and molecular diagnostics to advance preventive and precision medicine strategies in oral-systemic health.

The association between oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and periodontitis in large hospital cases with cohort controls has yet to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of periodontitis with OSCC across tumor location and tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage among Koreans ( N = 424). OSCC cases ( n = 146) were recruited from Seoul National University Dental Hospital and matched by age, sex, and smoking to controls ( n = 278) from the Yangpyeong health and periodo
Our data suggested that periodontitis is independently associated with non-fatal stroke, and its impact seems to be greater among younger or normotensive Korean adults.
Periodontitis may be an independent risk factor for hemorrhagic stroke. Risk groups include males, patients without diabetes, and obese subjects.
Algorithm using salivary MMP-9 and S100A8 showed high diagnostic power for periodontitis. Both salivary S100A8 and MMP-9 showed prognostic ability for periodontitis, but S100A8 was better.
Periodontitis was independently associated with cognitive impairment after controlling for various confounders. Further longitudinal research is needed to determine whether periodontitis plays a role in cognitive decline in older adults.
Our data showed that hypertension was associated with periodontitis in Korean female adults independent of known confounders.
Our data showed that inadequate dietary vit C intake was independently associated with periodontitis among Korean adults. Hence, adequate intake of dietary vitamin C could be substantially important on the promotion of periodontal health among Korean adults.
These results suggest that periodontitis could be an independently related factor on MetS. Hence, dentists and physicians should be aware of the importance of periodontitis as a potential source of inflammatory burden.
This study aimed to evaluate the causal association of periodontal disease with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke, after controlling for various confounders among the Korean population. A retrospective cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) was performed during 2002 to 2015 (baseline: 2002 to 2005; follow-up: 2006 to 2015) in the Republic of Korea. A total of 298,128 participants with no history of AMI or stroke were foll
Our results suggest that a group of systemic biologic markers represented by TNF-α and IL-6 might mediate the association between MetS and periodontitis adjusted for various confounders. Additional evidence is needed to generalize our results more widely.
Our data suggest that high concentrations of S-NO are associated with severe periodontitis. Thus, S-NO may serve as a potential biologic marker for detecting and monitoring periodontitis.
Over 90% of oral cancers are oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Hitherto, early detection marker for OSCC has not been available. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic ability of salivary matrix-metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) for OSCC. Total of 318 participants with 106 cases and 212 controls were included: OSCC cases were from Seoul National University Dental Hospital and age, sex, and smoking matched controls were from Yangpyeong
Among occupational health behaviors, wearing personal protective respiratory masks in work was significantly associated with less overall occupational dental erosion.
Our data showed that NRLT was independently associated with CI. Hence, rehabilitation of the lost teeth could be important for the maintenance of cognitive function.
