Professor Hyung Jun Kim's research lab specializes in biomedical imaging, dental materials science, and molecular mechanisms of disease, with a focus on improving diagnostic accuracy in dentistry through deep learning, evaluating the long-term performance of dental restorative materials under physiological stress, and investigating the cellular and molecular pathways underlying drug-induced toxicity—particularly cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. The lab integrates advanced imaging techniques such as micro-CT and panoramic radiography with molecular biology to bridge clinical diagnostics and therapeutic interventions. Current research also extends to fish immunology, exploring viral cross-protection and interferon-based antiviral strategies.

Patients with odontogenic cysts and tumors may have to undergo serious surgery unless the lesion is properly detected at the early stage. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the real-time object detecting deep convolutional neural network You Only Look Once (YOLO) v2-a deep learning algorithm that can both detect and classify an object at the same time-on panoramic radiographs. In this study, 1602 lesions on panoramic radiographs taken from 2010 to 2019 at Yons
It was recently reported that prophylaxis against infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) in fish was induced by pre-exposure to the infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). Here the establishment of IHNV immunity in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was investigated by IHNV challenge following non-lethal pre-infection with IPNV. Also, synthetic double-stranded RNA polyinosinic polycytidylic acid, Poly(I:C), an inducer for interferon (IFN), was evaluated as a substitute for IPNV induc
In the present study, the internal adaptation of dentin-composite interfaces with various resin composite materials under conditions of thermomechanical loading was analyzed nondestructively using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and these results were compared with analyses of microgaps after sectioning. Additionally, the correlation of internal adaptation with polymerization shrinkage strain and stress was evaluated. Four nonflowable resins, Gradia Direct (GD), Filtek P90 (P9), Filtek Z35
Cisplatin (cis-diaminedichloroplatinum-II) is an extensively used chemotherapeutic agent, and one of its most adverse effects is ototoxicity. A number of studies have demonstrated that these effects are related to oxidative stress and DNA damage. However, the precise mechanism underlying cisplatin-associated ototoxicity is still unclear. The cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) has emerged as a key regulator of cellular energy metabolism and homeostasis. Here, we demonstrate for t
