Professor Hyunsoo Chung's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal oncology and molecular pathology, with a particular emphasis on the early detection and molecular mechanisms of gastric carcinogenesis. The lab investigates pre-malignant conditions such as intestinal metaplasia, identifying driver genes and cellular heterogeneity using multi-omics approaches, including single-cell and spatial transcriptomics. Their work bridges basic molecular biology with clinical applications, aiming to improve risk stratification and develop endoscopic interventions for gastric motility disorders and early gastric cancer. The lab also explores novel endoscopic therapies, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy, for post-surgical complications.

Intestinal metaplasia (IM) is a pre-malignant condition of the gastric mucosa associated with increased gastric cancer (GC) risk. Analyzing 1,256 gastric samples (1,152 IMs) across 692 subjects from a prospective 10-year study, we identify 26 IM driver genes in diverse pathways including chromatin regulation (ARID1A) and intestinal homeostasis (SOX9). Postesophagectomy gastric outlet obstruction occurs in 20 % – 30 % of patients who undergo esophagectomy and is associated with significant morbidity and delayed recovery [1]. Recently, endoscopic pyloromyotomy, also called gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), has been reported, in pigs and in a patient with refractory diabetic gastroparesis [2] [3]. We report a case of postesophagectomy delayed gastric emptying that was successfully treated with endoscopic pyloromyotomy.
The effect of curing history on the residual stress behaviors in semiflexible structure poly(4,4′-oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA–ODA) and rigid structure poly(p-phenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA–PDA) polyimide was investigated. Depending upon the curing history and different structures of polyimide, the residual stress behaviors and the morphology of polyimide thin films were detected in situ by using a wafer bending technique and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), respectively.
