Professor Jae Joon Kim's research lab specializes in advanced electronic and biomedical systems, focusing on the development of smart, adaptive, and high-performance devices for healthcare and human-machine interaction. Key research directions include skin-interfaced electronics for personalized medicine, frequency-selective sensors for noise-resistant human-machine interfaces, and integrated circuits for high-speed, low-jitter applications. The lab also investigates molecular mechanisms in plant development and immune responses in pediatric transplantation, demonstrating a multidisciplinary approach spanning nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, and molecular biology.

The flowering time of plants is affected by modest changes in ambient temperature. However, little is known about the regulation of ambient temperature-responsive flowering by small RNAs. In this study, we show that the microRNA156 (miR156)-SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE3 (SPL3) module directly regulates FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) expression in the leaf to control ambient temperature-responsive flowering. Overexpression of miR156 led to more delayed flowering at a lower ambient temperature (
Accurate transmission of biosignals without interference of surrounding noises is a key factor for the realization of human-machine interfaces (HMIs). We propose frequency-selective acoustic and haptic sensors for dual-mode HMIs based on triboelectric sensors with hierarchical macrodome/micropore/nanoparticle structure of ferroelectric composites. Our sensor shows a high sensitivity and linearity under a wide range of dynamic pressures and resonance frequency, which enables high acoustic frequen
This LC ring oscillator is an architectural experiment to reduce the phase noise of an LC oscillator even further with a ring type structure. An LC oscillator with a special ring type structure performs phase noise filtering and attenuation. To prove the concept, several LC-ring oscillators are fabricated in 0.6 /spl mu/m, single-poly, triple-metal, CMOS. The three-stage LC-ring oscillator has -132 dBc/Hz measured phase noise at 600 kHz offset frequency from a 900 MHz carrier.
The development of donor-specific HLA antibodies (DSA) is associated with worse renal allograft survival in adult patients. This study assessed the natural history of de novo DSA, and its impact on renal function in pediatric renal transplant recipients (RTR). HLA antibodies were measured prospectively using single-antigen-bead assays at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months posttransplant followed by 12-monthly intervals and during episodes of allograft dysfunction. Of 215 patients with HLA antibody monitoring
Skin-interfaced electronics have emerged as a promising frontier in personalized healthcare. However, existing skin-interfaced patches often struggle to simultaneously achieve robust skin adhesion, adaptability to dynamic body motions, seamless integration of bulky devices, and on-demand, damage-free detachment. Here, a hybrid strategy that synergistically combines these critical features within a thin, flexible patch platform is introduced. This design leverages shape memory polymers (SMPs) arr
This paper presents a salient clock deskewing method with a mixed-mode delay-locked loop (MDLL) for high-speed synchronous DRAM applications. The presented method not only solves the resolution problem of conventional digital deskewing circuits, but also improves the jitter performance to the level of well-designed analog deskewing circuits, while keeping the power consumption and locking speed of digital deskewing circuits. The whole deskewing circuit is fabricated in a 3.3-V 0.6-/spl mu/m trip
This study presents a flexible wireless electronic skin (e-skin) sensor system that includes a multi-functional sensor device, a triple-mode reconfigurable readout integrated circuit (ROIC), and a mobile monitoring interface. The e-skin device's multi-functionality is achieved by an interlocked micro-dome array structure that uses a polyvinylidene fluoride and reduced graphene oxide (PVDF/RGO) composite material that is inspired by the structure and functions of the human fingertip. For multi-fu
The first examples of negative solvatochromism in neutral azo dyes containing both strongly electron-donating bis(dialkylamino)thiazolyl and electron-withdrawing 4-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)phenyl or 2-thiazolyl moieties are reported.
Skin Electronics To overcome the physical limits of real life, realistic experiences and interactions in the virtual space are desirable, especially in the current pandemic situation. In article number 2009602, Jae Joon Kim, Yan Wang, and co-workers introduce the current advances in skin electronic devices. As a next-generation device platform, advanced on-skin electronics can replace the conventional bulky augmented reality and virtual reality devices, to yield highly immersive experiences.
(Dialkylamino)thiazole dimers act as very strong electron-donating coupling components in azo dyes, the first and second UV–VIS absorption bands of which were observed at λ = 568–737 (ε = 24000–88000) and 404–475 (ε = 9200–52000) nm in dichloromethane, respectively. The azo compounds derived from the (dialkylamino)thiazole dimers having very strong electron-withdrawing moieties such as 4-(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)phenyls, 2,4-dinitrophenyl, and thiazol-2-yls exhibited a negative solvatochromism.
