Professor Jae Myung's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal diseases, with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and rare gastrointestinal conditions such as mesenteric lipomas and rectal syphilis. The lab investigates clinical epidemiology using real-world data, including national health insurance claims, to improve disease identification and outcomes. It also explores novel therapeutic approaches, such as probiotic and herbal interventions for *H. pylori* infection, and evaluates clinical risks in endoscopic procedures, particularly in patients with comorbid conditions like obstructive sleep apnea.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
Patients with IBD can be accurately identified using Korean insurance claims data by combining information regarding the International Classification of Disease 10th revision codes and the IBD medications used. The prevalence of IBD continues to increase, with an apparent shift toward younger (< 30 years) age groups.
We report a rare case of giant mesenteric lipoma presenting with colicky abdominal pain. A 29-yr-old woman underwent laparoscopic resection for a giant mesenteric lipoma causing compression of the ileal loop. The resected ileal segment was encased by a giant fatty tissue, and normal mucosal fold patterns of the resected ileum were effaced by the mass. Microscopically, the mass was characterized by homogenous mature adipose tissue without cellular atypia, which was compatible with the diagnosis o
Korean patients with UC may have a better clinical course than Western patients, as indicated by a lower colectomy rate. The overall colectomy rate has continued to decrease over the past three decades.
In patients with OSA, this limited sized study did not disclose an increased risk of cardiopulmonary complications during diagnostic EGD under sedation.
The combination of fermented milk containing L paracasei and G glabra reduced H pylori density and improved histologic inflammation. However, their mechanisms of action should be elucidated in further studies.
Rectal syphilis, known as a great masquerader, can be difficult to diagnose because of its variable symptoms. Gastroenterologists should be aware of the possibility of rectal syphilis when confronted with anorectal ulcers, and should gather a detailed history about sexual preferences and practices, including homosexuality. We report a case of primary rectal syphilis mimicking rectal cancer on radiologic imaging. In this report, we described the clinical, endoscopic, and radiologic features of th
Colonoscopy is currently regarded as the gold standard and preferred screening method for colorectal cancer (CRC). Recently, however, a limitation of colonoscopy in the prevention of CRCs has been identified, particularly in the right-sided colon, and the problem of so-called interval cancers has emerged. The prevalence of interval cancer is estimated to be between 4% and 8% of CRCs detected. Although the exact etiology of interval cancer remains unknown, factors implicated in the development of
The current meta-analysis suggests that Codon 13 mutation of KRAS gene seems to correlate with the OS of patients with CRC, but has similar OS to those with KRAS wild-type in patients receiving anti-EGFR therapy. No difference was detected in the OS of CRC patients with codon 13 mutation versus codon 12 mutation.
Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a recently identified entity that is considered to be a type of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with a unique immunophenotype and a predilection for the oral cavity of patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although its clinical features may help in the differential diagnosis, an extraoral location in a patient without HIV makes it more difficult to suspect clinically. This case report is the first to describe a patient with PBL originating from the j
Healthcare resources should be prioritized to allow adequate colonoscopic capacity, especially for men, individuals in the screening-age group, and at primary healthcare facilities. Cost-effective strategies to improve the quality of colonoscopy may focus on primary healthcare facilities and high-volume facilities in Korea.
Liquiritigenin may ameliorate TNBS-induced colitis in mice by suppressing expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through NF-κB pathway.
