Professor Jaeryung Oh's research lab specializes in retinal and choroidal imaging, with a focus on understanding the structural and vascular changes in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), and other retinal diseases using advanced imaging modalities such as spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The lab investigates the correlation between objective imaging biomarkers—such as IS/OS defects, choroidal thickness, and vascular density—and visual outcomes, aiming to improve early diagnosis and prognosis. A key research direction involves elucidating the role of microvascular dysfunction in retinal pathologies, even before overt structural changes occur.

BCVA after MHS correlates with objectively ascertainable SD-OCT measurements of IS/OS defects and other features. The postoperative area of the IS/OS defect, when directly measured, correlates more strongly with BCVA than do linear-based measurements, perhaps because of the irregular shape of the IS/OS defect after surgery.
In addition to vascular insufficiency in the choroid or choriocapillaris, retinal vascular alteration was apparent in eyes with early AMD. It may suggest that retinal vessels were involved in the pathogenesis of AMD even while changes in nonvascular components of the retina were not yet apparent.
Vascular density of choriocapillaris varies with retinal vascular density rather than the structure of choroid using optical coherence tomography angiography. In contrast, retinal vascular density changes as the retinal structure. Our results provide more information about the relationship between retina and choroid.
Subfoveal CT was thinner in early AMD patients with RPD than in those without RPD. Lower baseline mean OPP and a history of systemic hypertension could be risk factors associated with the progression of choroidal thinning in early AMD patients with RPD.
Lesions exhibiting retinal opacity characteristic of commotio retinae corresponded to hyperreflective outer segment lesions without the increase in retinal thickness on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.
Biometric characteristics such as AL and ACD were different between eyes with CSC and fellow eyes. Variations in biometry, which correlated with CT differences, might be related to differences in refractive errors between eyes.

Characteristics of cystoid spaces of eyes with MacTel 2 were different from those in eyes with MacTel 1, retinal vein occlusion, and diabetic macular edema. The irregular boundaries and low reflectivity of the cystoid spaces in MacTel 2 may represent the degenerative origin of the disease.
