Professor Jaewoo Lee's research lab specializes in advanced materials for environmental and biomedical applications, with a primary focus on developing functional hydrogels and mixed matrix membranes for water purification and regenerative medicine. The lab investigates sustainable and high-performance materials—such as gellan gum, carrageenan, and polyvinyl alcohol—engineered for enhanced adsorption, mechanical stability, and biocompatibility in applications ranging from dye removal and desalination to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell delivery. A key research direction involves optimizing membrane structures and material compositions to improve selectivity, efficiency, and energy sustainability in water treatment processes.

Federated learning is a learning method that collects only learned models on a server to ensure data privacy. This method does not collect data on the server but instead proceeds with data directly from distributed clients. Because federated learning clients often have limited communication bandwidth, communication between servers and clients should be optimized to improve performance. Federated learning clients often use Wi-Fi and have to communicate in unstable network environments. However, a
Various pollutants of different sizes are directly (e.g., water-borne diseases) and indirectly (e.g., accumulation via trophic transfer) threatening our water health and safety. To cope with this matter, multifaceted approaches are required for advanced wastewater treatment more efficiently. Wastewater treatment using mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) could provide an excellent alternative since it could play two roles in pollutant removal by covering adsorption and size exclusion of water contamina
Methylene blue (MB), a common dye in the textile industry, has a multitude of detrimental consequences on humans and the environment. Accordingly, it is necessary to remove dyes from water to guarantee our health and sustainable ecosystem. In this study, we developed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel adsorbents with high adsorption capacity by adding three types of carrageenan (kappa, iota, and lambda) to remove MB from water. Thanks to the functional groups, the PVA/carrageenan membranes d
Recent embedded systems are becoming integrated systems with components of different criticality. To tackle this, mixed-criticality systems aim to provide different levels of timing assurance to components of different criticality levels while achieving efficient resource utilization. Many approaches have been proposed to execute more lower-criticality tasks without affecting the timeliness of higher-criticality tasks. Those previous approaches however have at least one of the two limitations; i
Since the specific energy consumption (SEC) required for reverse osmosis (RO) desalination has been steeply reduced over the past few decades, there is an increasing demand for high-selectivity membranes. However, it is still hard to find research papers empirically dealing with increasing the salt rejection of RO membranes and addressing the SEC change possibly occurring while increasing salt rejection. Herein, we examined the feasibility of the process and material approaches to increase the s
