Professor Jee-Hoon Han's research lab focuses on the socioeconomic impacts of public policy, particularly in the areas of social welfare, health economics, and pandemic-related behavioral and economic responses. The lab investigates how government assistance programs—such as SNAP, Medicaid, and school nutrition programs—affect household well-being, material hardships, and long-term resilience. It also explores the role of technology adoption in education and the psychological and social dimensions of leisure and well-being during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. The lab employs advanced econometric methods and mixed-methods approaches to generate timely, evidence-based policy insights.

Abstract This study examines the current state of acceptance of online classes using the technology acceptance model. The background of the study is the turning point in Korean education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and speculation about changes in the post-COVID educational environment. To measure the acceptance rate of online classes, a survey was conducted on a total of 313 university students taking online classes. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The result
This paper addresses the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by providing timely and accurate information on the impact of the current pandemic on income and poverty to inform the targeting of resources to those most affected and assess the success of current efforts. We construct new measures of the income distribution and poverty with a lag of only a few weeks using high frequency data from the Basic Monthly Current Population Survey (CPS), which collects income information for a large, re
This article examines whether expanding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility reduces material hardships of low‐income households. During the Great Recession, many states expanded the income threshold of eligibility for SNAP. I show that expansions in eligibility increased the SNAP participation rate by 3–5 percentage points. I also find that the expansion leads to a modest decrease in nonfood hardships, such as rent and utility delinquencies. However, the increase in SNAP
This study aimed to determine the health and happiness of older women participating in dance activities using the phenomenological analysis method. The study used snowball sampling to recruit eight participants among older women participating in a 3-month dance program in Korea, starting from March 2019. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participatory observations, after which the gathered raw data were codified, systematically arranged, and analysed. The contents were then cat
This paper investigates the interactions between health and nutritional assistance programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and school lunch programs. Exploiting variation in SNAP eligibility across states and over time, I find strong evidence of program interactions: when a state moves from the federal rule to the most extensive SNAP eligibility rule, enrollment in free school lunch and WIC increases by 4.1 and 7.9 percentage points, respectively. I estimate that the federal government spends an a
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and related restrictive measures have impacted on leisure activities globally; South Korea is no exception. In this cross-sectional study we identified the need to increase leisure opportunities during social distancing and respond to changes in leisure activities post-COVID-19. The leisure attitude, stress-related growth, and quality of life of 260 participants were examined via an online survey. Data were analyzed through structural equation mod
The importance of person-environment fit has been highlighted for human resources management in convergence environment. This paper was validated through a structural relationship
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries allowed only the vaccinated to travel abroad, and some still continue with these restrictions. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with the intention to travel abroad during this pandemic. An online survey was conducted with 270 vaccinated Korean participants. The theoretical framework of the extended goal-directed behavior model was used to predict the overseas travel intentions of tourists in the COVID-19 environment. The data were
We surveyed the golf fashion apparel purchase decisions of 270 golf players in Korea using the extended model of goal-directed behavior. Frequency, confirmatory factor, reliability, correlation, and path analyses were performed and structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Attitude, subjective norms, and perceived control were not significantly associated with golfers' desire in relation to apparel purchase decisions. However, positive and negative anticipated emotions and prior
This paper examines inequality in both leisure and consumption over the past four decades using time use surveys stretching from 1975 to 2016. We show that individual and family characteristics, especially when including work hours, explain most of the long run variation in leisure. We then use these characteristics to predict the distribution of leisure in the Consumer Expenditure Survey, a survey that also provides detailed information on consumption. The advantage of this approach is that it
We use large-scale diary data from a representative sample of Americans to proxy welfare at the level of individual activities. We make three contributions. First, we examine the association between individual activities and happiness, and show how this association has changed over time. Compared to 1985, domestic work and social care produce more happiness today. Watching TV produces less happiness today than it used to. Second, we combine activity-level data on happiness and time allocation to
