Professor Jeong-Han Kim's research lab specializes in analytical chemistry with a focus on the development and validation of advanced multi-residue analytical methods for environmental and biological samples. The lab primarily employs liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) to detect and quantify pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and natural products at trace levels. Key research directions include method optimization for complex matrices such as human serum, urine, hair, and agricultural products, as well as metabolomic profiling of herbal medicines using UPLC-QTOF MS. The lab also explores the structure-property relationships of functional polymers, particularly liquid crystalline polyguanidines, for potential applications in materials science.

A screening method for simultaneous analysis of 379 pesticides in human serum was developed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Electrospray ionization with positive/negative switching mode of LC-MS/MS was adopted, and scheduled multiple reaction monitoring for each target compound was established. The limit of quantitation was 10 ng/mL for 94.5% of the total pesticides, and the correlation coefficients of calibration were ≥0.990 for 93.9% of the pesticides. For the
Discriminating between two herbal medicines (Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius), with similar chemical and physical properties but different therapeutic effects, is a very serious and difficult problem. Differentiation between two processed ginseng genera is even more difficult because the characteristics of their appearance are very similar. An ultraperformance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF MS)-based metabolomic technique was applied for the me
Multiresidual pesticide analysis in hair can provide useful perspectives on the relationship between pesticides and human health. To establish a rapid and simultaneous analytical method using LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS, optimization of hair pulverization, extraction solvent and purification with dispersive SPE was performed for 300 pesticides. Hair pulverization was standardized with a ball mill, at 30 Hz for 20 min (10 min twice), using 3-mm diameter beads. For extraction, 0.1% formic acid in aceton
The dissipation behaviors of acetamiprid and chlorantraniliprole in kimchi cabbages were studied under open-field conditions. A simple and rapid analytical method was developed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) conditions of two pesticides were optimized to quantify and identify the pesticide residues. Sample preparation was performed by the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged
Multiresidual pesticide determination in a biological sample is essential for an immediate decision and response related to various pesticide intoxications. A rapid and simultaneous analytical method for 260 pesticides in human urine was developed and validated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). High speed positive/negative switching electrospray ionization (ESI) mode was used, and scheduled multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) was optimized. Three versions of scaled-
Modified polyguanidines were prepared, and their liquid crystalline properties were studied using optical polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Parameters examined include chirality, the uniformity of the lengths of side chains, and attached side-chain mesogens. If the side chains on the repeat units are identical, then polymer has a more ordered structure in both solution and the solid state. Uniform lengths of the side chains are also important. Febrile EPTB referred as FUO showed nonspecific clinical manifestations. The active application of cross-sectional imaging tests according to clinical clues or randomly in the absence of local manifestations, combined with invasive diagnostic approaches even for atypical presentations may lead to an earlier diagnosis of febrile EPTB.
LGC-42153, 2-fluoro-1-[3-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylcarbamoylsulfamoyl)pyridin-2-yl] propyl methoxyacetate, is a new sulfonylurea herbicide for use in rice. Its breakdown and metabolism was studied in soil under flooded conditions using two radioactive tracer compounds labelled at either the propyl group or the pyrimidine ring. The half-life of LGC-42153 was approximately 3.0 days. The mass balance over 120 days ranged from 94.0 to 104.2% of applied radiocarbon, and no significant amount of vol
