Professor Jihee Kim's research lab focuses on biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine, with a strong emphasis on tissue engineering, fibrosis mechanisms, and the development of bioactive materials for clinical applications. The lab investigates molecular pathways in fibrotic diseases and cancer, particularly the roles of signaling molecules like ERK and PTK7 in tissue remodeling and tumorigenesis. It also explores the repurposing of natural byproducts—such as spent coffee grounds—for high-value bioactive ingredients, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach combining materials science, biochemistry, and translational medicine. Recent work includes the development of mechanical actuation systems for biomedical devices and the evaluation of topical antioxidant formulations for skin regeneration.

Our results suggest that implantation of barbed thread induces strong anchorage to skin tissue. Quantitative analysis of collagen and its downstream signaling molecule TGF-β supports the long-term durability of the thread. Therefore, the authors expect potential beneficial effect for rejuvenation on its clinical application.
