Professor Jin Young Lee's research lab specializes in clinical and translational studies focused on improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in surgical and anesthetic conditions. The lab investigates postoperative complications such as postoperative sore throat, rectal pain after laparoscopic surgery, and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), with an emphasis on identifying risk factors and underlying mechanisms. Additionally, the lab explores neuromodulatory effects of drugs like nefopam in chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, highlighting its potential in pain management. The research integrates clinical imaging, pharmacological mechanisms, and patient-centered outcomes to guide evidence-based practice in anesthesiology and surgical oncology.

Magnetic resonance imaging was superior to CT in preoperative staging of uterine cervical carcinoma and MRI should be used instead of CT for preoperative staging of this disease.
While graphene and its derivatives have been suggested as a potential nanomedicine in several biomimetic models, their specific roles in immunological disorders still remain elusive. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) may be suitable for treating intestinal bowel diseases (IBDs) because of their low toxicity in vivo and ease of clearance. Here, GQDs are intraperitoneally injected to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced chronic and acute colitis model, and its efficacy has been confirmed. In particular
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) acylate transfer (t)RNAs with amino acids. Charging tRNAs with the right amino acids is the first step in translation; therefore, the accurate and error-free functioning of ARSs is an essential prerequisite for translational fidelity. A recent study found that methionine (Met) can be incorporated into non-Met residues of proteins through methionylation of non-cognate tRNAs under conditions of oxidative stress. However, it was not understood how this mis-methiony
The objective of this study is to evaluate the degree of symptom improvement and the change of electrophysiological and ultrasonographic findings after sonographically guided local steroid injection using an in-plane ulnar approach in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Seventy-five cases of 44 patients diagnosed with CTS were included and evaluated at baseline and at 4 and 12 weeks after injection. All patients received injection with 40 mg of triamcinolone mixed with 1 mL of 1% lidocaine into the ca
Chloride is important for maintaining acid-base balance, muscular activity, osmosis and immunomodulation. In patients with major trauma, chloride levels increase after fluid therapy; this is associated with poor clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether hyperchloremia was associated with increased mortality in patients who had sustained major trauma. This study enrolled 266 major trauma patients by retrospective chart review, from January 2011 to December 2015. Patien
This study sheds light on the nursing situation during crises involving serious infectious diseases; to combat these, more medical facilities are needed, and staff should be proactively guided on how to care for patients. It can serve as part of a good foundation for further study of medical staff during recurring epidemics.
Heat shock proteins have been implicated as endogenous activators for dendritic cells (DCs). Chronic expression of heat shock protein gp96 on cell surfaces induces significant DC activations and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-like phenotypes in mice. However, its potential as a therapeutic target against SLE remains to be evaluated. In this work, we conducted chemical approach to determine whether SLE-like phenotypes can be compromised by controlling surface translocation of gp96. From scree
The results of our study revealed that anticonvulsants were the leading culprit drugs for DRESS, and carbamazepine was the individual drug most commonly associated with DRESS in Korea. Further studies of the mechanisms of action of these drugs are required in order to facilitate prompt diagnosis and effective management, which can affect prognosis and clinical outcome, of DRESS.
The appearance of senescent cells in age-related diseases has spurred the search for compounds that can target senescent cells in tissues, termed senolytics. However, a major caveat with current senolytic screens is the use of cell lines as targets where senescence is induced in vitro, which does not necessarily reflect the identity and function of pathogenic senescent cells in vivo. Here, we developed a new pipeline leveraging a fluorescent murine reporter that allows for isolation and quantifi
Defects in the nuclear lamina occur during physiological aging and as. result of premature aging disorders. Aging is also accompanied by an increase in transcription of genes encoding cytokines and chemokines,. phenomenon known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Progerin and prelamin. trigger premature senescence and loss of function of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), but little is known about how defects in nuclear lamin. regulate SASP. Here, we show that both proger
Few studies have evaluated the risk factors for in-hospital mortality in critically ill surgical patients who have undergone emergency gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality in critically ill surgical patients after emergency GI surgery. The medical records of 362 critically ill surgical patients who underwent emergency GI surgery, admitted to intensive care unit between January 2007 and December 2011, were revie
For the application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as clinical therapeutics, the regulation of cellular aging is important to protect hMSCs from an age-associated decline in their function. In this study, we evaluated the effects of hypoxia on cellular senescence and the immunomodulatory abilities of hUCB-MSCs. Hypoxic-cultured hUCB-MSCs showed enhanced proliferation and had increased immunosuppressive effects on mitogen-induced mononuclear cell proliferation. We found that BMI1, a member of t
Intraperitoneally administered nefopam yielded a dose-dependent attenuation of mechanical allodynia and decreased neurokinin-1 receptor concentration, suggesting that the neurokinin-1 receptor is involved in the antiallodynic effects of nefopam in vincristine neuropathy.
