Professor Ji-Won Kim's research lab focuses on translational oncology and molecular gastroenterology, with a primary emphasis on identifying biomarkers and genetic alterations that influence clinical outcomes in gastrointestinal cancers, particularly gastric cancer. The lab investigates the roles of key signaling molecules such as VEGF-A, TGF-β1, and PIK3CA mutations in tumor progression and treatment response, as well as the impact of immune and metabolic pathways on cancer-related conditions like sarcopenia and obesity. Additionally, the lab explores predictive biomarkers for chemotherapy response and survival outcomes in metastatic and advanced-stage cancers.

Behavioral parameters in car following and other models of driving behavior are expected to be correlated. An investigation is conducted into the effect of ignoring correlations in three parameters of car-following models on the resulting movement and properties of a simulated heterogeneous vehicle traffic stream. For each model specification, parameters are calibrated for the entire sample of individual drivers with Next Generation Simulation trajectory data. Factor analysis is performed to und
The effect of rain on freeway flow breakdown behavior is investigated. Three aspects of flow breakdown are analyzed for rain versus no rain (clear) weather conditions. First, the probability of breakdown occurrence is examined by analyzing the distribution of prebreakdown flow rates observed immediately before the onset of traffic breakdown by using a survival analysis approach. At all study sections, a reduction with pre-breakdown flow rates is observed under rain conditions compared with distr
Serum VEGF-A, TGF-1β, and IL-1β levels, in addition to leukocyte and platelet counts, are shown to be associated with clinical outcomes. Leukocyte and platelet counts are correlated with serum VEGF-A and TGF-β1 levels.
PIK3CA mutations are frequent in gastric cancer. However, their pathological and clinical implications are still unclear. We analyzed the clinicopathological characteristics according to the PIK3CA mutation status of patients with stage IB-IV disease who underwent gastrectomy between May 2003 and Dec. 2005 (cohort 1; n = 302) and of those with stage IV disease who received gastrectomy between Jul. 2006 and Dec. 2012 (cohort 2; n = 120). PIK3CA mutations were de
FFX and GNP showed similar efficacy and comparable toxicity in MPC patients. Although the GNP group had a higher chance to receive second-line chemotherapy, they did not have improved overall survival.
Here, it demonstrates that LU's antiobesity and antiinflammatory functionality affect inhibition of muscle protein degradation, and consequently, these interactions by LU exerts a protective effect against obese sarcopenia.
Our data support that ABCB1 polymorphisms may predict PFS after first-line TH chemotherapy in patients with HER2-positive MBC. In contrast, FCGR2A 131H/R and FCGR3A 158V/F polymorphisms could not predict treatment outcomes.
Reliability is a fundamental requirement in electric propulsion systems, involving a particular approach in studies on system failure probabilities. An intrinsic improvement to the propulsion system involves introducing robust architectures such as fault-tolerant motor drives to these systems. Considering the potential for hardware failures, a fault-tolerant design approach will achieve reliability objectives without recourse to optimized redundancy or over-sizing the system. Patients with chemosensitive aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) could benefit from high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (auto-SCT). We report clinical outcomes of HDC using a novel regimen consisting of mitoxantrone, etoposide, cytarabine, and melphalan (NEAM) with auto-SCT. A total of 69 patients were consecutively enrolled. Median age was 42 years (range, 20-66 years). Median event-free survival (EFS) was 17.9 months. Median overall survival (OS) has
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) oral spray for oral mucositis (OM) induced by intensive chemotherapy with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In this phase 2 study, patients were randomized to either rhEGF (50 microg/mL) or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. The primary endpoint was incidence of National Cancer Institute (NCI) grade ≥2 OM. A total of 138 patients were enrolled in this study. In the intention-to-treat an
