Professor Ji-Yong Moon's research lab focuses on identifying bioactive natural compounds from plants and endogenous metabolites for their therapeutic potential in metabolic and inflammatory diseases. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of enzymes such as arginase and nitric oxide synthase in metabolic syndrome, obesity, and chronic lung diseases, with an emphasis on arginine metabolism and its impact on vascular and hepatic function. Proteomics and metabolomics approaches are employed to discover novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for precision medicine in metabolic and pulmonary disorders.

To identify new active cosmetics ingredients of natural origin, we screened 299 parts of 263 plant species collected from Jeju Island, the southernmost island of the Korean Peninsula. Plant parts were investigated for their elastase and tyrosinase inhibitory activity for the purpose of identifying anti-aging and skin-whitening ingredients with the potential for use as raw materials in cosmetics. In the anti-elastase inhibition assay, 3 extracts, including Aesculus turbinata, Taxillus yadoriki, a
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous set of disorders, characterized by airflow limitation, and reduced lung function. Despite increasing knowledge regarding its pathophysiology, there has been limited advancement in therapeutics and the current treatment strategy is symptom management and prevention of exacerbations. Areas covered: Biomarkers represent important tools for the implementation of precision medicine. As fundamental molecules of all living processes, prote
Upregulated arginase activity, which competes with nitric oxide synthase (NOS), impairs nitric oxide production and has been implicated in various metabolic disorders. This study examined whether circulating amino acid metabolite ratios are associated with arginase and NOS activities and whether arginine bioavailability is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Data related to arginase and NOS activities were collected from non-diabetic Koreans without cardiovascular disease (<i>n</i> = 1998
Arginase inhibition ameliorated obesity-induced hepatic lipid abnormalities and whole body adiposity, possibly as a result of increased hepatic NO production and subsequent activation of metabolic pathways involved in hepatic triglyceride metabolism and mitochondrial function.
Compared with the presumed healthiest cohort, the control group with PA>1500 METs-min/week, the COPD group with reduced PA has a higher risk of ED visit or hospitalisation.
Since arginase has been shown to compete with nitric oxide (NO) synthase, emerging evidence has reported that arginase inhibition improves obesity by increasing NO production. Semen cuscutae (SC), which is a well-known Chinese medicine, has multiple biological functions such as anti-oxidant function and immune regulation. In this study, we investigated whether the SC as a natural arginase inhibitor influences hepatic lipid abnormalities and whole-body adiposity in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obe
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a malignant clonal disorder of hemopoietic stem cells characterized by abnormal proliferation and accumulation of immature granulocyte. Leukostasis is one of the complications of CML and is characterized by partial or total occlusion of microcirculation by aggregation of leukemic cells and thrombi leading to respiratory, ophthalmic or neurologic symptoms. We experienced a rare case of avascular necrosis of the femoral head as the initial presentation of chro
Our results indicate that FEF25-75 %pred can be used as a surrogate for predicting AHR in patients with respiratory symptoms.
Cluster analysis of age, score for each item, and total COAT score identified 4 distinct phenotypes of chronic cough with significant differences in the aetiologies. Subgrouping patients with chronic cough into homogenous phenotypes could provide a stratified medical approach for individualising diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Asthmatic patients are generally considered to have an increased risk of mortality compared with subjects without asthma. However, this issue has been less evaluated using nationally representative data. Moreover, it is unclear whether respiratory comorbidities other than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are associated with increased mortality in asthmatic patients compared with subjects without. Using a nationally representative sample database, we performed a retrospective cohort s
ICS increases risk of bone demineralization and fracture in patients with COPD. It should be generally avoided in patients with previous fractures or significant osteoporosis. If they are used in such patients, close monitoring is recommended for accelerated bone demineralization.
The positive correlation was found in both healthy people and asthmatic patients. Therefore, PM10 can increase airway inflammation.
COPD is common in patients with NTM-PD, and patients with NTM-PD had a six-fold increase in the odds of having COPD than those without NTM-PD. The presence of COPD and NTM-PD had a significant negative effect on survival. These findings may support the need to assess the presence of COPD in patients with NTM-PD and the potential negative effects associated with the co-existence of COPD and NTM-PD.
