Professor John Hoon Rim's research lab specializes in clinical and translational genomics, focusing on the genetic basis of inherited disorders, particularly inherited sensory neuropathies and hearing loss. The lab employs next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics to enable early molecular diagnosis and personalized management in pediatric and adult-onset sensory disorders. A key emphasis is placed on optimizing diagnostic yield through standardized, team-based approaches and exploring novel therapeutic targets, such as KCNQ4 potassium channels, for hearing loss. The lab also investigates metabolic and infectious disease biomarkers, including LDL cholesterol estimation and antimicrobial resistance in pathogens like *Acinetobacter baumannii*.

These findings suggest that NGS is an accurate diagnostic tool to differentiate causes of INS because diagnostic tests, such as electroretinography and optical coherence tomography, are not easily applicable in young infants. Accurate application of NGS using a standardized, stepwise, team-based approach in early childhood not only facilitated early molecular diagnosis but also led to improved personalized management in patients with INS.
NGS is a useful diagnostic tool with great utility for patients with EOE. Diagnostic yields can be maximized with a standardized and team-based approach.

The proportion of TEM-135 PPNG has continuously increased since 2012, in association with clonal spread. The difference at position 18 of the TEM-135 sequence can be interpreted as the existence of multiple clonal complexes. The possibility that TEM-135 was acquired via foreign plasmids requires careful follow-up and continuous monitoring of TEM-135 to ascertain whether it constitutes a step towards evolutionary change.
