Professor Joonseok Lee's research lab specializes in the design and application of advanced nanomaterials for biomedical and environmental technologies. Key research directions include the development of graphene-based nanocomposites for enhanced photocatalysis and chemiluminescence sensing, peptide-based self-assembled nanostructures with tunable optical and surface properties, and multifunctional nanotheranostic platforms for image-guided cancer therapy. The lab also focuses on innovative nanomaterials for real-time detection of airborne pathogens, emphasizing point-of-care diagnostics and environmental monitoring.

Highly photoactive, graphene-wrapped anatase TiO(2) nanoparticles are synthesized through one-step hydrothermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and TiO(2) crystallization from GO-wrapped amorphous TiO(2) NPs. Graphene-TiO(2) nanoparticles exhibit a red-shift of the band-edge and a significant reduction of the bandgap (2.80 eV). Graphene-TiO(2) nanoparticles possess excellent photocatalytic properties under visible light for the degradation of methylene blue.
We report on chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) between graphene nanosheets and chemiluminescent donors. In contrast to fluorescence resonance energy transfer, CRET occurs via nonradiative dipole-dipole transfer of energy from a chemiluminescent donor to a suitable acceptor molecule without an external excitation source. We designed a graphene-based CRET platform for homogeneous immunoassay of C-reactive protein (CRP), a key marker for human inflammation and cardiovascular diseas
Down to the wire: A simple vapor-transport process using linear diphenylalanine as the starting material has resulted in the self-assembly of cyclodipeptide nanowires with an orthorhombic symmetry. Furthermore, the single-crystalline nanowires exhibit a strong blue luminescence centered at 465 nm and possess semiconducting properties (see picture).
A vertically aligned peptide nanowire film, prepared by the self-assembly of diphenylalanine upon exposure to fluorinated aniline vapor at high temperature, exhibits a superhydrophobic property due to its nanoscale roughness and low surface free energy. We fabricated a self-cleaning, superhydrophobic surface by hierarchically re-organizing peptide nanowires into a hill-and-valley-like structure using capillary force induced by solvent-evaporation. Our approach provides an alternative way of nano
Various cancer therapies have been developed, but tumor recurrence with incomplete tumor killing and remaining tumor cells/tissues is frequent in monotherapies. Herein, a nano-bio therapeutic emulsion formulated with multifunctional nanoscintillators and anaerobic Clostridium novyi-NT spores for synergistic image-guided combinational cancer therapy is reported. MRI visible nanoscintillators (NSs) are synthesized with a NaGdF4 :Tb,Ce@NaGdF4 core/shell structure for an image-
Airborne pathogens causing infectious diseases are often highly transmittable between humans. Therefore, an airborne pathogen-monitoring system capable of on-site detection and identification would aid tremendously in preventing and controlling the early stages of pathogen spread. Here, we describe an integrated sampling/monitoring platform for on-site and real-time detection of airborne viruses. We used MS2 bacteriophage and avian influenza virus (AIV) H1N1 to evaluate bioaerosol sampling and d
Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) presents a significant hazard under numerous realistic scenarios. The standard detection scheme for this fast-acting toxin is a lab-based mouse lethality assay that is sensitive and specific, but slow (∼2 days) and requires expert administration. As such, numerous efforts have aimed to decrease analysis time and reduce complexity. Here, we describe a sensitive ratiometric fluorescence resonance energy transfer scheme that utilizes highly photostable semiconductor quan
In this study, a signal-amplifiable nanoprobe-based chemiluminescent lateral flow immunoassay (CL-LFA) was developed to detect avian influenza viruses (AIV) and other contagious and fatal viral avian-origin diseases worldwide. Signal-amplifiable nanoprobes are capable of size-selective immobilization of antibodies (binding receptors) and enzymes (signal transducers) on sensitive paper-based sensor platforms. Particle structure designs and conjugation pathways conducive for antigen accessibility
We present a microfluidic artificial photosynthetic platform that incorporates quantum dots and redox enzymes for photoenzymatic synthesis of fine chemicals under visible light. Similar to natural photosynthesis, photochemical cofactor regeneration takes place in the light-dependent reaction zone, which is then coupled with the light-independent, enzymatic synthesis in the downstream of the microchannel.
