Professor Jung Won Kang's research lab specializes in regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering, with a focus on mesenchymal stem cells—particularly adipose tissue-derived MSCs—for tissue repair and immunomodulation. The lab also investigates natural compounds and their anti-adipogenic effects using in vitro models such as 3T3-L1 cells, aiming to develop therapeutic strategies for metabolic disorders. In parallel, the lab develops intelligent robotic systems, including omni-directional mobile robots for industrial and assistive applications, emphasizing mobility in confined spaces and human-robot interaction. These diverse research directions reflect a strong integration of biological science and robotics to address clinical and industrial challenges.

Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs), which can differentiate into several lineages, have immunomodulatory properties similar to those of bone marrow-derived MSCs. However, the specific mechanism by which the immunomodulatory effect of MSCs occurs is not clear. In this study, we isolated canine AD-MSCs (cAD-MSCs) and induced their development into adipocyte, osteocyte, and neuron-like cells. We then investigated their phenotype and cytokine expression to determine whether they
Human amniotic membrane-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hAM-MSCs) are capable of differentiating into several lineages and possess immunomodulatory properties. In this study, we investigated the soluble factor-mediated immunomodulatory effects of hAM-MSCs. Mitogen-induced peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) proliferation was suppressed by hAM-MSCs in a dose-dependent manner as well as hAM-MSC culture supernatant. Moreover, interferon-gamma and interleukin (IL)-17 production significantly de
Objectives To summarise and critically evaluate the evidence from randomised clinical trials (RCTs) of t'ai chi as a treatment for patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Design Eleven databases were searched from their inception to July 2010. RCTs testing t'ai chi against any type of controls in human patients with OA localised in any joints that assessed any type of clinical outcome measures were considered. Two reviewers independently performed the selection of the studies, data abstraction and va
This study was conducted to explore the antiadipogenic effect and possible mechanism of Gambisan on 3T3-L1 cells. For quality control, Gambisan was standardized by HPLC and the standard compounds ephedrine, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, and caffeine were screened. Cultured 3T3-L1 cells that had been induced to differentiate were treated with various concentrations of Gambisan or its major component extracts (Ephedra intermedia Schrenk, Atractylodes lancea DC., and Thea sinensis L.) for 72 hours fo
This paper presents a complete and efficient coverage path planning method for mobile robots. Its applications include robots for de-mining, cleaning, painting and so on. When a mobile robot performs area coverage task, completeness and efficiency of coverage are important factors. To achieve completeness easily, we adopt a divide and conquer strategy. We developed a novel cell decomposition algorithm that divides a given area into several cells. To achieve efficiency, each cell is covered by a
This paper shows omni-directional mobile robots that help the disabled to work in a factory environment. The functions of the robot were determined based on varied survey results. According to the survey results, the robot should be able to move freely in small and narrow spaces. To satisfy this condition, mecanum wheels were used for our robots. The mobility in small spaces, user convenience of controlling the robot, and user safety were considered in the development process of the robots. The
Platelets play a critical role in pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders and strokes. The inhibition of platelet function is beneficial for the treatment and prevention of these diseases. In this study, we investigated the anti-platelet activity of erythro-(7S,8R)-7-acetoxy-3,4,3',5'-tetramethoxy-8-O-4'-neolignan (EATN), a neolignan isolated from Myristica fragrans, using human platelets. EATN preferentially inhibited thrombin- and platelet-activating factor (PAF)-induced platelet aggregation
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) caused by PRRS virus (PRRSV) is an important disease that severely affects the swine industry and, therefore, warrants rapid and accurate diagnosis for its control. Despite the progress in developing diagnostic tools, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods such as reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) to diagnose PRRSV infection, its diagnosis at the genetic level is challenging because of its high genetic variabili
Herbal medications might have benefits for VaD patients but they need to be evaluated further.
This paper introduces assistive mobile robots that help the disabled to work in a factory environment. The target users and the functions of the robot were determined based on varied survey results. The robots were developed through an iterative process of designing, development and evaluation. As a result, three assistive mobile robots were developed. The first version of the robot focused on the various functions. The robot is equipped with a robot arm and a forklift to support various tasks f

Two different ac plasma displays having different bus electrode position were simulated using two-dimensional fluid code. In a conventional plasma display, the bus electrode was located at the outer part of each cell. However, in a proposed structure (hereinafter the in-bus), the bus electrode was positioned at the inner part of each cell. The differences in electron density, Xe/sup */(/sup 3/P/sub 1/) density and wall charge distributions between the conventional and the in-bus structures were
In this paper, a testbed of QoS-aware ubiquitous content access (UCA), which allows a user to access and consume multimedia content through convergent networks of broadcasting and communications (WLAN/CDMA) using diverse devices in a seamless and transparent way, is designed and implemented based on the adaptation of scalable and non-scalable content.
TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized from a triethylene glycol solution of titanium isopropoxide (Ti(O-iPr)4) by refluxing at 270°C for 12 hrs. The as-prepared sample was heated at 600 °C for 3 hrs in order to study the thermal stability of the sample. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples were well indexed to the anatase phase. The field emission TEM images show uniform spherical morphologies with average sizes of 25 nm. The electrochemical measurements revealed that the discharge capaci
In this study, we examine the state of health issues and healthcare usage among Korean firefighters and investigate their perceptions of and needs for integrative medicine. In this way, we aim to explore how integrative medicine and Korean medicine approaches could improve and assist healthcare services for firefighters. Furthermore, our findings will provide policymakers and healthcare providers with the necessary basic information to develop integrative medicine systems suited to firefighters.
