Abstract Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is an effective treatment for adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), raising the question about the role of graft-versus-leukemia effect against ATL. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the effects of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) on overall survival, disease-associated mortality, and treatment-related mortality among 294 ATL patients who received allogeneic HCT and survived at least 30 days posttransplant with sustai
Immunologic reconstitution after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation is a critical component of successful outcome. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation in adult recipients is associated with slow and often inadequate immune recovery. We characterized the kinetics and extent of immune recovery in 95 adult recipients after a dual UCB (n = 29) and matched sibling donor (n = 33) or matched unrelated donor (n = 33) transplantation. All patients were treated with myeloablative conditi
The relationship between serum hepcidin, a key regulator of body iron homeostasis, and erythropoiesis was investigated before and after stem cell transplantation in 31 patients with hematopoietic malignancies. Serum hepcidin-25 was monitored using a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry-based assay system. Other iron- and erythropoiesis-related parameters and known hepcidin regulators, such as interleukin-6 and growth differentiation factor-15, were also monitored. The serum hepcidin le
Our meta-analysis demonstrates no adverse association between any ABO mismatching and survival. However, marginally lower OS found in recipients of minor or bidirectional mismatched grafts from unrelated donors suggested the need for larger studies focusing on unrelated transplants.
To clarify which is preferable, a related donor with an HLA-1 Ag mismatch at the HLA-A, HLA-B, or HLA-DR loci in the graft-versus-host (GVH) direction (RD/1AG-MM-GVH) or an HLA 8/8-allele (HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, and HLA-DRB1)-matched unrelated donor (8/8-MUD), we evaluated 779 patients with acute leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, or myelodysplastic syndrome who received a T cell-replete graft from an RD/1AG-MM-GVH or 8/8-MUD. The use of an RD/1AG-MM-GVH donor was significantly associated wit
The risk of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after HLA-matched sibling bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is lower in Japanese than in Caucasian patients. However, race may have differential effect on GVHD dependent on the graft source. North American Caucasian and Japanese patients receiving their first allogeneic BMT or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation from an HLA-matched sibling for leukemia were eligible. BMT was performed in 13% of the Caucasian patients and in 53% of the Jap
The putative impact of alcohol on pancreatic cancer (PC) risk remains controversial. Here, we conducted a case-control study in Japanese to assess the impact of alcohol in conjunction with polymorphisms in alcohol-metabolizing enzymes. Cases were 160 patients with pancreatic cancer at Aichi Cancer Center, Nagoya, Japan. Two control groups of 800 age- and sex-matched non-cancer subjects each were independently selected. The impact of alcohol and polymorphisms in aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) G
The impact of the direction of HLA mismatch (MM) on outcome in unrelated cord blood (UCB) transplantation has not yet been clarified. We conducted a retrospective study using national registry data on 2977 patients who underwent transplantation using a single UCB for leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. HLA matching was assessed by serologic data for HLA-A, -B, and -DR loci. The median age of the recipients at transplantation was 41 years (range, 0-82 years), and 2300 recipients (77%) were age
