High-intensity lasers are opening up a new realm of light-matter interactions. In his Perspective, Yamanouchi reviews recent progress in this field, focusing on two intensity regimes: the Coulombic regime, which mostly deforms molecular structures and causes tunneling ionization, and the relativistic regime, where high-intensity lasers produce x-rays and high-energy particles and may cause nuclear fusion reactions. Efforts are under way to increase laser intensity further for accessing the next
The dispersed fluorescence (DF) and stimulated emission pumping (SEP) spectra of acetylene originating from single rovibronic levels of the à 1Au state were measured with resolutions of 30 and 0.5 cm−1, respectively, in order to examine the vibrational level structure of the electronic ground X̃ 1Σ+g state. The SEP spectra revealed that the number of vibrational levels under each peak in the DF spectra increases with vibrational energy from a single vibrational level below 8000 cm−1 to as many
The dispersed fluorescence (DF) spectra for the fluorescence emitted from eight single rovibronic levels in the C̃ 1B2 state are observed. The vibrational quantum numbers for these levels are (v′1,v2,v′3) =(0,0,0), (0,1,0), (0,2,0), (0,0,2), (1,0,0), (1,1,0), (1,2,2), and (3,1,0). The 484 vibrational levels distributed between 4300 and 21 600 cm−1 in the electronic ground state X̃ 1A1 are identified based on the assignment of the 1388 transitions in the DF spectra. The vibrational level energy i
Rotational structures of A–X and B–X vibronic transitions of HgHe, HgNe, and HgAr van der Waals (vdW) complexes formed in supersonic free jets have been investigated. An analysis of the rotational contours shows that rotational structures for the six isotopic species, mHgHe, mHgNe, or mHgAr (m=204,202,201,200,199, and 198), are overlapped, and the observed isotopic splittings are utilized for the definite assignment of the vibrational quantum numbers in the A and B states. Based on the vibration
We report on the parametric generation of 100 fs sub-6-cycle 40 μJ pulses with the center wavelength at 5.2 μm using a 1 ps 2.1 μm pump laser and a dispersion management scheme based on bulk material. Our optically synchronized amplifier chain consists of a Ho:YAG chirped-pulse amplifier and white-light-seeded optical parametric amplifiers providing simultaneous passive carrier-envelope phase locking of three ultrashort longwave pulses at the pump, signal, and idler wavelengths corresponding, re
Among currently available optical spectroscopic methods, Raman spectroscopy has versatile application to investigation of dynamical processes of molecules leading to chemical changes in the gas and liquid phases. However, it is still a challenge to realize an ideal standoff coherent Raman spectrometer with which both high temporal resolution and high-frequency resolution can be achieved, so that one can remotely probe chemical species in real time with high temporal resolution while monitoring t
Propagation of guided waves in anisotropic metal-diffused optical waveguide is investigated. Two-dimensional guide-mode dispersion curves are computed and classified for a metal-diffused waveguide with arbitrary optic-axis orientation in various diffusion depth. It is found that a new leaky surface wave exists in the region where the refractive index is above the cutoff value, not below it. Typical values of decay constant are about 5 dB/cm for the wave propagating along X axis on 128/spl deg/ r
The stimulated emission pumping (SEP) spectroscopy is applied to SO2 cooled rotationally in a supersonic free jet to investigate the vibrational and rotational level structure in the 17 300–17 900, 21 400–21 500, and 22 200–22 500 cm−1 regions of the electronic ground state. It is concluded that respective vibrational levels are found to couple with each other by the network of Fermi and Coriolis interactions on the basis of the following grounds: (1) there are a number of Fermi pairs of the vib
