Professor Kichang Han's research lab specializes in interventional radiology and image-guided therapies for liver and gynecological malignancies. The lab focuses on optimizing treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly through transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA), with an emphasis on improving outcomes in advanced or challenging cases such as those with portal vein tumor thrombosis. The lab also investigates novel embolic agents and minimally invasive interventions for conditions like ovarian endometriomas and uterine fibroids, integrating clinical outcomes with biomarkers and imaging follow-up.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the fifth most common cancer that predominantly occurs in liver cirrhosis patients, requires staging systems to design treatments. The barcelona clinic liver cancer staging system (BCLC) is the most commonly used HCC management guideline. For BCLC stage B (intermediate HCC), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the standard treatment. Many studies support the use of TACE in early and advanced HCC patients. For BCLC stage 0 (very early HCC), TACE could be an a
Background Local tumor progression (LTP) is associated with poorer survival in patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for colorectal liver metastasis (CLM). An algorithmic strategy to predict LTP may help in selection of patients who would benefit most from RFA for CLM. Purpose To estimate local tumor progression-free survival (LTPFS) following RFA of CLM and develop an algorithmic strategy based on clinical variables. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, between March 2
The natural history of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) is dismal (approximately 2-4 mo), and PVTT is reportedly found in 10%-40% of HCC patients at diagnosis. According to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) Staging System (which is the most widely adopted HCC management guideline), sorafenib is the standard of care for advanced HCC (i.e., BCLC stage C) and the presence of PVTT is included in this category. However, sorafenib treatment only marginally
Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of catheter-directed sclerotherapy (CDS) with 95% ethanol in patients with primary or recurrent ovarian endometriomas. Materials and Methods In this prospective study, 14 participants (mean age, 32 years; range, 20-44 years) who underwent CDS for ovarian endometrioma from March 2015 to December 2017 were evaluated. Diagnosis was based on symptoms and imaging studies. To assess the impact of CDS on ovarian reserve, serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) was measu
Background Data are limited regarding comparison between nonspherical polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles and tris-acryl gelatin microspheres (TAGM) in uterine artery embolization (UAE). Purpose To compare pain after UAE with PVA versus TAGM for treatment of symptomatic fibroids. Materials and Methods In this randomized clinical trial, participants were assigned to be administered nonspherical PVA (355-550 μm) or TAGM (500-700 μm). Both groups were administered fentanyl-based intravenous patient-c
Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization can be a safe treatment option in infiltrative HCC patients with Child Pugh class A. Child Pugh class A, radiotherapy for portal vein tumor thrombosis after TACE and tumor response are good prognostic factors for an increased survival after TACE in patients with infiltrative HCCs.
Cardiac CT revealed subprosthetic pannus to be a cause of the hemodynamic changes in patients who had undergone aortic valve replacement. By helping quantify the encroachment ratio by pannus, cardiac CT may help differentiate which subprosthetic panni might lead to substantial flow limitation over the prosthetic aortic valve.
The diagnostic yield of liver MRI for hepatic metastasis was very low in newly diagnosed colorectal cancer patients who showed TSTC hepatic lesions or metastasis-negative hepatic findings on CT. Staging liver MRI is likely unnecessary for them.
Placement of partially covered dual stents appears to be a promising technique that may offer successful palliation for patients who develop afferent loop syndrome after various types of surgery.
The EW-7197-eluting NFCS is effective and safe for suppressing granulation tissue formation after stent placement in a canine urethral model.
