Potential effects of aerobic and resistance training in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients have been partially elucidated. We investigated effects of a home-based exercise program on physical functioning and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in PD patients. Patients were randomly assigned to exercise (n = 24) and usual care (n = 23) groups. The exercise patients performed aerobic exercise thrice weekly and resistance training twice weekly at home for 12 weeks. The usual care patients receive
Uremic dysbiosis induces IR and sarcopenia, leaky gut and lipodystrophy.
The vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist tolvaptan delays the progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). However, some patients discontinue tolvaptan because of severe adverse aquaretic events. This open-label, randomized, controlled, counterbalanced, crossover trial investigated the effects of trichlormethiazide, a thiazide diuretic, in patients with ADPKD receiving tolvaptan (n = 10) who randomly received antihypertensive therapy with or without trichlormethiazide for 1
Exercise tolerance in PD patients was partially determined by age, sex, and SMI. Moreover, this is the first study to demonstrate the strong relationship between aerobic capacity and HRQOL in PD patients.
RM can be expected to reduce healthcare resource consumption in APD patients. .
Our findings suggest that previous abdominal surgery (except on the ileum) and patient age are not contraindications to free jejunal graft harvest.
We describe here 2 patients with question mark ears in one family. They had the peculiar auricular deformities bilaterally. Both patients had a cleft between the helix and earlobe respectively. The upper portion of the auricle showed marked prominence. The mother also showed notching between the helix and earlobe. The literature is reviewed and discussed.
We aimed to investigate the effects of exercise on renal outcomes in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). In a post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial of a 12-week home-based exercise program involving 47 patients undergoing PD, we excluded 18 patients with anuria and analyzed 13 and 16 patients in the usual care and exercise groups, respectively. The primary outcomes were weekly renal creatinine clearance (CCr) and urinary biomarkers: liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L
Numerous health concerns, primarily kidney injury, have been reported with the use of Beni-kōji CholesteHelp, a functional food containing red yeast rice. Here, we describe 2 cases of kidney injury caused by beni-kōji. The first case had normal kidney function before consuming the product. After several months of use, she developed hypertension. After 6 months of supplement consumption, her estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) dropped to 22.5 mL/min/1.73 m2. A spot urine sample
Residual renal function (RRF) is a strong prognostic factor of morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). We determined predictors of the RRF rate of decline using both baseline values and time-averaged ones. We retrospectively analyzed 94 patients being treated with PD at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center. The decline rate of RRF was calculated by a diminution in the weekly renal Kt/V between the first and last follow up divided by follow-up years. The mean fol
In patients with ADPKD treated with tolvaptan, dapagliflozin may have an additive effect in slowing ADPKD progression.
