Activated platelets expressing P-selectin in their surfaces are known to adhere to monocytes and neutrophils. We examined the possibility that the leukocytes are functionally modified by their adhesion to activated platelets. We used human peripheral blood monocytes and neutrophils and measured superoxide anion generation by these cells cultured with platelets. The levels of superoxide anion production were found to be markedly elevated when thrombin-activated platelets were used. The extent of
The Runt-related transcription factor (Runx) family plays various roles in the homeostasis of cartilage. Here, we examined the role of Runx2 and Runx3 for osteoarthritis development in vivo and in vitro. Runx3-knockout mice exhibited accelerated osteoarthritis following surgical induction, accompanied by decreased expression of lubricin and aggrecan. Meanwhile, Runx2 conditional knockout mice showed biphasic phenotypes: heterozygous knockout inhibited osteoarthritis and decreased matrix metallop

Although patients with diabetes reportedly have more back pain and worse patient-reported outcomes than those without diabetes after lumbar spine surgery, the impact of diabetes on postoperative recovery in pain or numbness in other regions is not well characterized. In this study, the authors aimed to elucidate the impact of diabetes on postoperative recovery in pain/numbness in four areas (back, buttock, leg, and sole) after lumbar spine surgery. The authors retrospectively reviewed 993 patien
We previously reported that activated platelets stimulated neutrophils and monocytes to produce superoxide anion (O2-) through the interaction between P-selectin and its carbohydrate ligand, sialyl Lewis X (sLeX) (Nagata, K., Tsuji, T., Todoroki, N., Katagiri, Y., Tanoue, K., Yamazaki, H., Hanai N., and Irimura, T. (1993) J. Immunol. 151, 3267-3273). In the present study, we investigated the role of cell surface carbohydrate chains of leukocytes in this process. Glycoconjugate-specific hydrolyti
According to NDB, approximately 1.3 million orthopedic inpatient surgeries were performed or claimed in a year in Japan. In May 2020, the first SoE period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of inpatient orthopedic surgeries in Japan decreased by 30%. Meanwhile, the decrease was relatively small during the SoE periods in 2021.
HU on lumbar CT in children and adolescents with DEXA Z -scores <-2.0, were lower when compared with healthy matched controls. This study suggests that HU on opportunistic CT scans of the spine may be used as a reasonable proxy for BMD in the pediatric population.
