中井国彦教授の研究室では、胎児期および乳児期の環境有害物質への曝露が子供の神経発達に与える影響を、日本における高魚介摂取習慣を踏まえた大型縦断研究(東北子供発達研究)を通じて解明しています。主にメチル水銀やPCB、ダイオキシン類などの環境持続性有機汚染物質の発達毒性を対象とし、特に性的差異や発達領域別の感受性の違いを明らかにしています。また、赤血球由来の酸素キャリアの血管収縮作用に関しても、生体内での作用機構の解明を進めています。

Adverse health effects following prenatal exposures to methylmercury (MeHg) have been apparent from several prospective cohort studies conducted in a fish-eating population.
