Professor Kwan Soo Ko's research lab specializes in microbial genomics and molecular epidemiology, focusing on the population structure, evolutionary dynamics, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms of pathogenic bacteria such as *Acinetobacter baumannii*, *Staphylococcus aureus*, and *Bacillus* species. The lab employs molecular typing techniques like multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and gene sequencing to investigate genetic diversity, horizontal gene transfer, and the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains. A key research direction involves developing molecular differentiation methods for accurate pathogen identification and guiding effective antimicrobial therapy.

Our data indicate that subgroup identification of A. baumannii may aid selection of appropriate antimicrobial agents for the treatment of Acinetobacter infections.
To investigate the evolutionary pattern and genotypic characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains in the Asian region, 74 MRSA strains isolated from 12 Asian countries were analyzed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and SCCmec typing. Overall, a total of 16 genotypes based on sequence type and SCCmec types were identified among MRSA strains from Asian countries. The population structure of the Bacillus cereus group (52 strains of B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis) was investigated by sequencing seven gene fragments (rpoB, gyrB, pycA, mdh, mbl, mutS, and plcR).
