Professor Kyu Hyuck Chung's research lab specializes in bioactive natural products and their molecular mechanisms, with a focus on identifying and characterizing compounds from traditional herbs and synthetic chemicals that exert protective or toxic effects on human cells. The lab investigates the pathophysiological mechanisms of environmental pollutants—such as microplastics and guanidine-based disinfectants—on the respiratory and hepatic systems, particularly in relation to fibrosis and oxidative stress. Additionally, the lab explores the therapeutic potential of natural compounds in treating liver fibrosis and estrogen-related disorders through in vitro and in vivo models.

Vector-based RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a valuable tool for analysis of gene function. We have developed new RNA polymerase II expression vectors for RNAi, designated SIBR vectors, based upon the non-coding RNA BIC.
