Muto教授の研究室は、頭頸部および食道のがんの早期発見に向け、窄波内視鏡法(NBI)やマクロスコピックな血管・表面構造の評価技術を応用した内視鏡診断の高度化を主眼としています。特に、胃がんにおけるM-NBIを用いた病変の微細構造解析や、アルコール代謝関連酵素の遺伝子多型と多病巣癌発生の関連解明にも取り組んでいます。また、口腔内細菌が発生させるアセトアルデヒドの役割を解明することで、上部消化管・呼吸器がんの発癌メカニズムの解明を目指しています。
