柴田麻州教授の研究室は、一般相対性理論と数値相対性理論を基盤に、中性子星合体やブラックホール-中性子星系の高精度な数値シミュレーションを展開しています。特に、GW170817に伴う重力波と電磁波観測の統合的解釈を通じて、合体後の高密度物質の性質や短時間ガンマ線バーストの中心駆動機構の解明をめざしています。近年の重力波観測結果を踏まえた核物質状態方程式の制約や、超質量中性子星の長寿命性に関する新たな知見も得られています。

Gravitational-wave observation together with a large number of electromagnetic observations shows that the source of the latest gravitational-wave event, GW170817, detected primarily by advanced LIGO, is the merger of a binary neutron star. We present numerical results of three-dimensional simulations for the merger of binary neutron stars in full general relativity. Hybrid equations of state are adopted to mimic realistic nuclear equations of state. We revisit the constraint on the maximum mass of cold spherical neutron stars coming from the observational results of GW170817. We develop a new framework for the analysis by employing both energy and angular momentum conservation laws as well as solid results of latest numerical-relativity simulations and of neutron stars in equilibrium. We carry out numerical-relativity simulations of coalescing binary neutron stars in a scalar-tensor theory that admits spontaneous scalarization. We model neutron stars with realistic equations of state. We choose the free parameters of the theory taking into account the constraints imposed by the latest observations of neutron-star--white-dwarf binaries with pulsar timing. We show that even within those severe constraints, scalarization can still affect the evolution of the binary neutron stars

We study the dynamical stability against bar-mode deformation of rapidly spinning neutron stars with differential rotation. We perform fully relativistic 3D simulations of compact stars with $M/R \geq 0.1$, where $M$ is the total gravitational mass and $R$ the equatorial circumferential radius. We perform fully general relativistic simulations of rotating stellar core collapse in three spatial dimensions. The hydrodynamic equations are solved using a high-resolution shock-capturing scheme.
