Professor Min-Seok Rha's research lab focuses on mucosal immunology and T cell responses in the context of respiratory viral infections, particularly SARS-CoV-2. The lab investigates tissue-resident memory T cells in the nasal mucosa, T cell exhaustion in severe COVID-19, and cross-reactive immunity from prior common-cold coronavirus exposure. They also explore systemic immune markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and hematocrit in obstructive sleep apnea, linking systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation to respiratory diseases. Their work bridges basic immunology with translational applications in vaccine development and host defense mechanisms.

In the current review, we describe SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4<sup>+</sup> and CD8<sup>+</sup> T-cell responses in acute and convalescent COVID-19 patients. Our meta-analysis revealed that the hematocrit value was significantly increased in patients with OSA, particularly in severe patients, compared with that in controls. However, the elevation was modest, and the hematocrit value is expected to be within the normal range in patients with OSA. These data suggest that OSA leads to slight increases in hematocrit but does not cause clinically significant erythrocytosis.

Patients with apnea-predominant OSA had more severe disease than those with hypopnea-predominant OSA; however, surgical outcomes, as evaluated by percentage AHI improvement, were comparable between the two groups.
