This paper describes the design, fabrication, and heat transfer characteristics of a loop heat pipe (LHP) with a kW-class heat transfer performance. A one-dimensional numerical model incorporating a two-phase flow pattern of the LHP condenser was developed during the design process. Based on the numerical model, a kW-class LHP comprising a single evaporator was constructed. At the evaporator, a stainless steel 316 (SUS316) box-type wick was installed, and pure water was used as the working fluid
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been transmitted across all over the world, in contrast to the limited epidemic of genetically- and virologically-related SARS-CoV. However, the molecular basis explaining the difference in the virological characteristics among SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV has been poorly defined. Here we identified that host sialoglycans play a significant role in the efficient spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, while this was not the case with SARS-CoV.
This case highlights the complexities of differential diagnosis based on the World Health Organization's 2016 guidelines. More integrated criteria to differentiate anaplastic PXA from GBM and epithelioid GBM, combined with genetic screening results, might be needed.
It has been shown that by electrochemical oxidation 7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole-tryptophan (NBD-T) is converted to fluorophores having the same emission and excitation spectra as those for other NBD-amino acids. NBD-dioxindolylalanine was tentatively assumed to be a main electrochemical oxidation product of NBD-tryptophan. A coulochemical cell placed between an analytical column and a fluorometer showed no detrimental effect on the separation of NBD-amino acids by reversed phase HPLC. Highly
Dystroglycan (DG) is a widely expressed, transmembrane glycoprotein complex that plays important roles by connecting the extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton. The alpha- and beta-DG subunits are produced by the cleavage of residues 653 and 654 of the precursor. To clarify the mechanisms involved in cleavage and subunit association, we performed a series of mutation analyses and made the following discoveries: (i) Disruption of the intramolecular disulfide bridge between Cys669 and Cys713 in
A novel analytical method for biological polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) was developed. Polyamines were separated by ion-pair reversed phase chromatography using a polymer-based octadecyl bonded column. A polyamine oxidase immobilized column worked effectively as a post-column reactor to convert polyamines to hydrogen peroxide which was eventually detected by electrochemical oxidation on platinum electrode. This method required neither tedious derivatization nor gradient elution
Metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC) is a common complication in patients with a malignant tumor, but it is difficult to decide the proper time to perform the necessary surgery. Here we analyzed the prognostic factors for postoperative walking ability. We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 112 MESCC patients treated surgically at our institute and divided them into ambulatory (n= 88) and non-ambulatory (n=24) groups based on their American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impai
Amperometric detection in high performance liquid chromatography was applied for the determination of carbohydrates in human serum. Remarkable difference of mannose content was observed for serum in disorder states compared with normal subjects. Clinical interest was suggested by an unsusceptibility of mannose to influence of meal and a significant correlation of mannose to glucose content. The selectivity involved in the method and the stability of a working electrode were excellent by virtue o
Galactose in plasma from patients with hepatic diseases who had undergone low level galactose infusion was determined by using HPLC with electrochemical detection (LCEC). Agreement between galactose concentration determined by the LCEC and a fluorometric method was remarkably good at moderate levels of galactose in plasma. However, the fluorometric method is not suitable for samples containing very small amounts of galactose (blood from hepatic veins) and even for a few samples at moderate galac
