Professor Peter J. Schulz's research lab focuses on psychosomatic and behavioral health, with a strong emphasis on stress reactivity, health literacy, and patient-doctor dynamics. The lab investigates chronic stress, cortisol reactivity, and their links to long-term health outcomes, while also exploring how patient empowerment and visual health communication can improve medication adherence and health comprehension. A central theme is the distinction between subjective (perception-based) and objective (performance-based) health literacy, with a focus on preventing health misinformation.

The beneficial effect of patients' high internal and concurrent physician-attributed control beliefs suggests that a so-called "joint empowerment" approach can be suitable in order to foster medication adherence, enabling us to address the question of control as a versatile component in the doctor-patient relationship.
The present study investigated the association between chronic stress and cortisol changes during the first hour after awakening in the morning. According to results of a pilot study, it was hypothesized that chronically stressed subjects would show a more enhanced and prolonged increase of cortisol level after awakening compared to non-stressed subjects. In 100 subjects, chronic stress was assessed twice with a 1-week interval between measures and cortisol was repeatedly measured during the fir
We conclude that visual-based interventions, particularly the ones using videos, are effective for improving HL and the comprehension of health-related material.
Self-reported, perception-based health literacy should be treated as a separate concept from objective, performance-based health literacy. Only objective health literacy appears to have the potential to prevent people from becoming victims of health disinformation.
