The elasto-migration of microparticles across a streamline induced by elasticity and inertia in microscale pipe flow of viscoelastic fluids was investigated using a holographic technique. The effects of blockage ratio (d/D), flow rate (Q), and entry length (L) on particle migration induced by fluid elasticity were evaluated. Single-line particle focusing was demonstrated for an elasticity-dominant fluid. Furthermore, shear-thinning effect on particle migration was evaluated. Finally, we propose
Reduction of frictional drag exerted on submerged marine vehicles results in considerable economic and environmental benefits. A lubricant-infused surface (LIS) inspired by Nepenthes pitcher was introduced as an emerging surface technology for substantial frictional drag reduction. However, the LIS easily loses its drag-reduction ability because the lubricant is easily depleted by shear stresses of external flow. In this study, a new biomimetic LIS with a unique surface topography is proposed to
Water harvesting is a core technology for collecting fresh water in arid areas. In this study, we design a three-dimensional cactus stem-inspired water harvesting system (WHS) with directional transport of absorbed fog. The bioinspired WHS consists of two distinct functions. One is an effective water-absorbing function with an antievaporating feature, and the other is an on-demand water-releasing function. The excellent water absorption capability of a mucilage-filled cactus stem covered with a
Accurate and immediate diagnosis of malaria is important for medication of the infectious disease. Conventional methods for diagnosing malaria are time consuming and rely on the skill of experts. Therefore, an automatic and simple diagnostic modality is essential for healthcare in developing countries that lack the expertise of trained microscopists. In the present study, a new automatic sensing method using digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM) combined with machine learning algorithms
The demand for fresh water is gradually and globally increasing due to the growth of population and water contamination. To meet this global demand, we fabricated metal-organic framework (MOF)-incorporated Cu-based alginate beads (Cu-MOF-Alg beads) for effective removal of water-dissolved salt ions from seawater. Alginic acid formed a matrix for preconfined Cu coordination. In this matrix, the MOFs were successfully in situ synthesized with organic ligands. The as-prepared Cu-MOF-Alg beads exhib
Sustainable and green energy techniques are in high demand as new energy sources. Over the decades, streaming potential/current has attracted attention as a hydrovoltaic energy technology. However, state-of-the-art technologies have bottlenecks in their practical application. Here, we propose a conductive polymer foam, called leaf-inspired energy-harvesting foam (LIEHF), containing polydimethylsiloxane with macro- and microporous structures homogeneously mixed with conductive carbon materials. The Harmonic Scalpel made by Ultracision is a system for endoscopic cutting. The energy source is vibration. The power box is attached to a forceps or blade, and the vibrational frequency of the blade approaches 55,500 cycles/second. This causes a knife-like action of the blade through tissue, with enough heating to create coagulation of small vessels. When this vibration energy is applied to the forceps configuration, coagulation occurs. By rotating the bottom blade of the forceps, the instrume
